Originally published at: It’s Completely Trump’s Supreme Court Now, And He Knows It
President Trump notched a startling legal win Friday evening, as the Supreme Court gave an early stamp of approval to a legal theory so outlandish that experts at one point predicted to TPM it wouldn’t “get a single vote.” The Court blessed, at the preliminary stage, Trump’s gambit to zero out money Congress already appropriated.…
Any legal scholar who thought the SCOTUS wasn’t in the tank for Trump was deluding themselves.
The only bright side here is that Thomas himself has come out against honoring precedent. That should be cited in every future SCOTUS decision when overturning every “precedent” set by this Court.
Well Clarence, with you clowns at the helm, an orangutan would be a definite improvement at this point.
Elimination of the filibuster has become a litmus test on Democratic Senator candidates. I’d like to add a couple of court reforms around the concept of term limits for the Supreme Court as a litmus test.
Lifetime appointments were supposed to shield the court from partisanship, but what they are presently doing is allowing unlimited partisanship and shielding the court from accountability. I suggest one of the following:
- Either actual terms (say, 10 years) after which they have to be reappointed by the sitting president and reapproved by the Senate or…
- Term limit that is structured in such a way that each justice’s term ends after a certain length of time. 2-3 every fixed number of years so each president is allowed to appoint a specific number each time ala the Fed.
Given just how wildly corrupt and partisan the Supreme Court has become, I think this is actually more important that eliminating the filibuster.
Thomas never cites Loving v. Virginia, the 1967 case covered in the movie Loving (2016), where SCOTUS ruled, 9–0, that interracial marriages could not be banned or penalized. As far as I can tell, the opinion by Chief Justice Earl Warren, the greatest Chief Justice ever in my view, relied on the same constitutional bases as the decisions that Thomas wants to overturn. So much for the Reconstruction Amendments!
Thomas is in an interracial marriage… This is another in the long list of Republicans self-favoring their own interests as opposed to what one might consider their typical bigotry orthodoxy, as in Dick Cheney favoring legal gay sex because of his gay daughter. I used to keep a list of such instances but no longer; and now TFG (The Felon Guy) has emerged as its star, with his tariffs, taking over corporations, dissing our military allies — did I miss something? Whatever it is, Thomas and his piratic crew will support it to the max.
I hope Mitch McConnell is happy with his legacy.
Radical reform of the Supreme Court, including both term limits and expansion to 13 justices, MUST be on the Democrats’ agenda for whenever they again hold the presidency and both houses of Congress. And then must come a systematic annulment of most of the work of the Roberts Court, starting with Citizens United. It’s hard to foresee what political circumstances will make this overhaul possible, but for the sake of the stability of the rule of law in the United States, it must somehow come about.
The Roberts Court has been at least as terrible disaster for our Republic as has been the rise of Trump. Somehow or other, both must be purged, or we are done-for as a democracy.
I thought he was actually congratulating Trump on his glorious leadership.
Once again just words from the dissenters. Raise your voices in the public square.

“The Judges, both of the supreme and inferior Courts, shall hold their Offices during good Behaviour” makes it appear that your eminently reasonable proposals, and others meeting that criterion, require Constitutional amendment; or impeachment and conviction. That’s unlikely. But with sufficient votes, Congress could expand the number of Justices, and perhaps even override a Presidential veto. That would allow a statutory change to the composition of the Court. Ending the filibuster might be necessary to go down this road.
We’ve been warned about such a change: any new governmental trifecta enacting such an expansion would be countered by the opposing trifecta, until climate change overtakes us all… or, we might have a Court as large as the Congress…
But just as the Rs are trying to block opposition voters, the Ds could empower voters. And they could have done so, but for Manchin & Sinema (and any other Senators holding their own opinions close), when they had their own trifecta 2021 through 2023. I hope that the nation, and Trump’s military, don’t disappoint in the 2026 midterms. I’m doing what I can in this regard, as a local D activist.
Wow, what a very accurate and incredibly depressing headline.
He is such a horrible little entitled creep. Unable to do anything useful. But so well armed to grab and hold everything he imagines he’s entitled to – which is a heck of a lot of stuff, both tangible and intangible. He truly is one of those monsters that idiots — in this case the Republican party and the billionaire boys club – told themselves that they’d be able to control. Nope.
The First Felon knew this long before Friday night. It’s just us that we have finally figured it out.
As I have said several times, this is not a problem because the court will take back these powers the next time a Democrat is elected president.
The Supreme Court isn’t. It has made the case for reform by its disregard for the people and the norms we’ve come to expect. Shame. We must expand the court and institute a retention process.
Justice Alito’s face in the photo tells you all you need to know about the attention the right wing of the Court is paying to the demolition of the Constitution by this adminstration.
Thomas sounds like he’s trying to channel somebody from the post-Reconstruction Klan. It’s totally a racist dog whistle. He is one messed-up dude.

Radical reform of the Supreme Court, including both term limits and expansion to 13 justices,
No, expand to 15 Justices. Adding 6 Dems would give them a three vote margin, the same that the GOP enjoys (sic!) now.
