Originally published at: It Appears Ed Martin ‘Doesn’t Have The Votes’ To Be Confirmed—At Least Not Right Now - TPM – Talking Points Memo
President Trump’s nominee for D.C. U.S. Attorney Ed Martin appears to be facing skepticism from the Senate Judiciary Committee, Republican members of which met this week to discuss the seemingly endless baggage and politically motivated acts that Martin has and will likely continue to mix into his work if officially confirmed to the position. Republicans…
President Trump said Thursday he’s nominating Waltz to be the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.
Hardly seems like appropriate action for the breach of security. But I guess Trump has no need for other countries so maybe it’s a good place to stash Waltz. Might even be seen as “approval” for Waltz’s actions…
there must be some sort of statute of limitations on putting ‘gate’ at the end of every scandal? and whatever it is, it has to be less than 50 years… right?
Ed Martin will be confirmed as Republicans fall in line.
That is in the end at least 50 of the 53 Republicans in the Senate, and I predict one of those will be Thom Tillis, after public hand wringing, will vote to confirm Martin.
From where I sit, Ed Martin has the votes to be confirmed as nothing more than a crazily immature nut case, serial fabulist and undistinguished lawyer.
Glad to see Durbin is stirring himself to maybe perhaps think about asking to pretend to have hearings which will be ignored and Martin will be appointed.
After 44 years in Congress and at 82 next election at least he’s finally shuffling off. Hopefully we get someone who understands that the fight is existential to replace him.
Look Cole, you and the rest of MAGA GOP long ago sold their dignity for power. You are tukhes-leker’s for the Convicted Felon. You know it, your Party knows it and the rest of the Country knows it as well. So just shut up and tukhus leke.
If the Republicans do vote to confirm Ed then they’re tied to his actions once he gets the title. They can try and claim that they didn’t know enough about him, but he’s out there showing them all what he is.
They knew it was over when Lara Trump took over the GOP purse strings.
Some Republicans are concerned that Ed Martin favored the 2021 Insurrection? And defended the perps in court and out? And yet, no one is calling for the arrest of these Republicans for treason?? What does the Convict in Chief have to say about Senator Tillis (etc)?
specifically noting… [Martin’s] past remarks criticizing police officers who defended the Capitol on January 6
Let’s take that into consideration i’ve taken it into consideration no way is he in any way suited for the job thank you for your attention to this.
Now, be serious.
Have we not yet learned to wade through all the BS and agree that Martin will be confirmed along party lines as though he were the perfect candidate we all want? Congress is nothing but a rubber stamp.
Yeah I almost wish the break in had been held at the Do Drop Inn or Motel 6 or something……
They are all being like Susie Collins-- oh so concerned but utterly willing to believe false promises.
" One GOPer Not Cool With Handing Congress’ Authority To Trump"
The real factor here is not that Trump does not command the Congress. He does not; Congress has more actual Constitutional power than the President, anyway. The real issue is that Congress cannot Constitutionally transfer any of its Constitutionally enumerated powers to the President, or to anybody else. Nor can the President Constitutionally commandeer any of those powers. The only way that a President can lawfully execute any of the powers Constitutionally designated to the Congress is through Constitutional amendment. So any impoundment of Congressionally appropriated funds by the President is unconstitutional, also the cancellation of Constitutionally mandated grants. The President cannot close any institutions created by Congress .The same holds for firing any employees of a Congressionally created agency. Ditto for the War Powers Act, which is completely unconstitutional.
We’re in bizarre times now, when the Congress has for whatever reasons delegated through law more and more of its powers to the President. Those acts have been generally accepted as valid, but they are all actually null and void. Even though some of those transfers have had beneficial effects, they’re still all illegal.
So, much as I hate to say it, Tom Tillis is right to be “not cool” with surrendering powers to the President - any President, not just this manifestly unqualified, dangerous, and corrupt one.
Do keep to your music, whatever its nature or natures. (Most of us enjoy many kinds.) Not just for your sanity but, even more, for your joy. Tonight I felt a longing for the Brahms’ violin concerto. In my head I usually hear Oistrakh’s recording of it. I am going to bed with this rendition of the third movement in my head:
Female virtuoso violinists are – well, not taken for granted today, but no longer are they curious specimens. This Tokyo orchestra has quite a few women in it, esp. among the violinists. Batiashvili is quite extraordinary. (She studied with a student of Oistrakh, as did I, if only from one once-removed in one master lesson a few years before I stopped playing seriously. You can see it in the way she wields her bow at the wrist and in her placement of her forefinger on the bow.)
ETA: Here’s Oistrakh with Klemperer, the whole concerto. The sound production is on a higher level, but so also (I think) is everything else.
So Rubio holds, what is it now, 4 full time positions? Does anyone know what his salary is at this point (since it isn’t temporally possible to devote full time to all of them, even with 0 hours of sleep time)?'|
His job description is to cause as much damage as possible before he is not confirmed, and his performance review gets an A.
I know, right? They sat on their hands for 3 months and finally decided they might push back, and if it weren’t for the effects of the tariffs Cole wouldn’t be saying anything now. He’d still be happy to let Trump and Musk destroy the federal govt and take the country with it.
This, and Rubio getting handed all the positions they were forced to otherwise abandon show just how small Trump’s pool of “trusted” people are. Of course, Rubio is likely ignoring all his supplemental job titles and letting those respective bureaus fester.
