Is Brazil The Next Coronavirus Hot Spot? | Talking Points Memo

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Brazil is emerging as potentially the next big hot spot for the coronavirus amid President Jair Bolsonaro’s insistence that it is just a “little flu” and that there is no need for the sharp restrictions that have slowed the infection’s spread in Europe and the U.S.

Has to be fake news, they are still in summer down there

Given that they have a southern hemisphere Trump in “charge”, it’s guaranteed…

Exactly. With a Cockholster clone in charge, what could possibly go wrong?

There is one major difference between Dr. Cadet Bones Spurs and Bolsnonaro, however: Jair served in his country’s military … and was discharged for misconduct.

When will we know if the Brazilian’s are waxing or waning, Corona-wise?

Trump’s crime family is scrambling to corner the Brazilian market on masks, ventilators, PPE…with the help of Bolsonaro of course. They all seem nice.

Although it seems like Bolsonaro’s alliles have more dignity and resign their post when they feel the president is wrong… good that we have that Great Protestant Morality in America…

With the recent information about how this virus is doing strange things, like killing young people with strokes, causing kidney issues, and doing something weird to the oxygenation and thickness of blood, it’s not really right to think this is the same as the standard respiratory virus anymore. It’s not even clear that it’s damaging lungs in the same way as the flu does, and there is zero reason to think it will get better or worse in the summer or winter, considering how it’s moving around in places that are warm or cold right now. The disease is killing too many people too fast to make it easy to examine all the patients and figure out why they all are dying, and idiots like Bolsonaro are only making that worse by ignoring what is going on.

Brazil, and anywhere that ignores the basics of how nations have gotten this under control (social distancing, isolation, masks, tracing) will be dealing with a lot of dead people in a very short time. This disease is going to be a very stark demonstration of how important competent governance is…we’ll see if humanity learns the lesson.

Darwin will teach them.

I lived in Sao Paulo for five years. Darwin will not teach those in power anything. The elite in all countries are, for the most part, insulated from the physical and economic consequences of this virus. Bolsonaro’s actions will devastate the Brazilian poor who do not have access to the same level of medical care, or economic support, as Bolsonaro. Invoking Darwin is typically done when a persons stupidity puts their own life in danger. In this case, stupid decisions by the powerful will mostly kill innocent people living at the margins of society.

The elites are only insulated if they succeed in not catching the disease: There is no effective treatment although the best medical care may give an individual a slight edge. It is hard on those with the diseases of affluence.

Those societies with less effective governance are at higher risk. Nature is not usually such a large factor in the success of the nations themselves.

Bolsanaro is a born again Christian, so he has that Great Protestant Morality.

That explains a lot.
