The FBI has no evidence supporting a sensationalist theory pushed by President Trump and Attorney General Bill Barr that foreign powers could hijack mail-in elections by mass counterfeiting absentee ballots, according to reports of a press briefing held by U.S. intelligence officials Wednesday.
I’m a little more worried about the 79 days after the election and before the inauguration. Desperate men do desperate things. And if McConnell is defeated all hell is going break lose while he’s a lame duck majority leader.
If the expresident were a regular fascist, eg Tom Cotton, then those would be terrible days.
But I believe that after Nov 3, trump is going to stay in Mar a Lago, silent and staring at the waves, until someone comes to take him away. It’s impossible to imagine him giving anyone anything after his massive defeat.
The notion that large numbers of counterfeits will be counted as votes is garbage, but large numbers of phony ballots that are not obvious fakes could slow counting way down as ballots are subjected to greater scrutiny (and greater scrutiny will likely mean a higher rate of rejection). I don’t think foreign powers would think it worth an attempt, though, especially when remote, online efforts at disruption remain so effective.
The GOP, on the other hand, will almost certainly do its best to slow counting and increase rejections by challenging large numbers of votes in targeted districts. Barr would dismiss my belief as a nonsensical conspiracy theory.
Also, the signature on the ballot is checked against the one on file with the election authority. It all makes this whole fraud/counterfeit business quite silly. But then, there are some pretty silly people out there who buy this crap.
OK. But what can they do without the House’s cooperation? And the filibuster can still gum up legislation. RBG can probably hold out until next year.
