Inside Louisiana’s Desperate Search For Ventilators | Talking Points Memo

On the same day that Louisiana’s governor was announcing the state had seen its highest spike in COVID-19 deaths yet, the state’s former secretary of health was on the phone with her U.S. senator trying to obtain more ventilators.

And Trump has the states bidding against each other. It’s a disgrace.

He’s a freak of nature.

why events like Mardi Gras went on.
“We were not psychics. We did not realize what was going to happen,” she said.

And the prez’nent was saying it was no worse than the flu, and taking no measures to prepare for or address the disease.
And, she didn’t have prez’nent’s intelligence briefings.
And, Louisiana voters weren’t concerned and never would have backed such a measure.
And, who the Hell pays attention to what happens in a place like Wuhan? Shit, it’s half way around the world.
And, I’m not gonna prioritize this string of causes, but I get the feeling that one thing leads to a lot of the others.

All of this was preventable. We do not have a functioning WH, therefore we have a pathetic federal government response. Trump was briefed about this. He chose his reelection over the lives of Americans.

And vested corporate interests, in whose regard “nationalization” was considered so dangerous. Better people die. That’s far less dangerous for the country.

“nobody, anywhere in the country, was canceling things at that time.”

Perhaps a little context is in order: “No red flags were given” by the federal government. - New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell on why the city moved forward with Mardi Gras celebrations. “If we were given clear direction we would not have had Mardi Gras and I would’ve been the leader to cancel it.”

You know, something like competent leadership in the WH.

When “nobody, anywhere in the country” is exemplified by Texas, Florida and Alabama it’s a pretty damned weak excuse.

“We were not psychics. We did not realize what was going to happen,” she said.

She was the State’s former Secretary of Health but, apparently, once she left that position she had no ability whatsoever to see what was coming down the pike.

Last night, we heard from a friend who tested positive for Covid-19. The test was administered on March 18 and she just received her results last night -13 days later! She had self quarantined and that is a good thing. She had a nasty cough, fatigue is over 70 but no fever.

States run by democratic governors don’t seem to get enough ventilators…you don’t hear the governor of TX, FL or AL complaining about that. Wonder why ?

His reelection is a higher priority. He needs both FL and TX to win. There is no statewide stay at home order in Florida.

But what about the ventilators. Are the republican governors better at acquisition? Is Trump making sure that FL & TX have them at the expense of NY, CA & NY?

Sure seems that way. Florida is testing at a very fast clip. WA state is unable to get the basic supplies to test. And ventilators, CA received broken ones, WA cannot get what it needs. When there is a call for ventilators in FL, I have no doubt that what is in the National stockpile will be distributed to FL. I believe it is why Trump is holding back sending them to other hotspots.

After Katrina, schools in neighboring states had hundreds of kids enrolling without records. We had no idea where to put them, so we just had to place them where they said they should be.
There will be another inundation after this, but those children will also be orphans. The trauma will be unbelievable.

But notice that the Govs of TX and FL haven’t said anything about their requests for supplies being filled so quickly and amply. That would, um, tell the rest of us what he was doing. So what’s the point for the POS unless he can publicize it? He’ll be telling the world soon enough.

At least they got 150 working ventilators from the national stockpile. The feds shipped 170 to CA, except they weren’t usable as shipped. My theory is that a Trump admin person ordered the warehouse people to sort out the broken ones for special delivery to a state that isn’t sufficiently “respectful” to Trump.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said Saturday that the federal government had sent the state “170 broken ventilators”

P.S. Newsom had the broken ones shipped to a company in San Jose that put on 24-hr shifts to repair the units over the weekend. I presume they’ve been distributed to hospitals by now.

He’d have no hesitation doing that but the current situation is not apt to help his prospects for re-election. The real problem is choosing wishful thinking over reality. He was totally unable to believe and react to the exponential growth from a handful of cases.

This is such a disgrace. Trump likes to refer to himself as a “wartime” President. But a wartime President would inspire and lead the nation, unify us, and call for all hands on deck. We would have more than enough ventilators in just a couple of days if, literally, anyone else was President. Instead, now, I have to wait for the My Pillow guy to make a few token ventilators for the free publicity.

Trump is not above of making sure that the pandemic hit states governed by Democrats harder that red states. I am willing to bet that he will be scaring battleground state voters with what happens to states that vote Democratic.

What ventilators? He is doing useless cotton face masks.

The Senate Intelligence Committee was briefed on January 24th that it could be a pandemic. Did they sound the alarm? Nope. But some of them did sell their stock near all time highs. At least something was salvaged by their quick action and communication.
