With the approval of a state House committee Thursday morning, an Indiana bill adding new ID requirements to the mail voting process is heading to the state House floor.
The particular provision here sounds as if it simultaneously makes things harder for legitimate voters while making them easier for small-scale fraudsters. D/L number and last four digits of SSN are pretty readily scammable. The bad faith is clear from the “separate legislation” to eventually fix the exclusion of voters who try to register with the number the state has already given them for that purpose.
“I mailed them the photocopy of my ID that was required.”
“Sorry, it wasn’t in the envelope.”
“Here…I even took a photo of the materials I was putting in the envelope.”
“Sorry, it wasn’t in the envelope.”
“Bullshit it wasn’t in the envelope…you people destroyed it so you could reject my ballot.”
“Good thing we never sent any sort of notification to you that we were rejecting your ballot for that reason, and we have no process for fixing it anyway, so you never came to us and this conversation is never going to happen.”
So now there has to be a well-funded drive to assist people who need it to get their proper identification in order and navigate confusing internet voting portals.
Earlier versions of the legislation had even more aggressive provisions to restrict voter access. At one point, lawmakers were considering demanding that voters provide proof of citizenship when they register to vote — a requirement that has been blocked in court challenges when other states sought to impose it.
It’s like Republicans can’t keep track of the shot down chicanery that has been tried by several states in their court cases.
what remains is a requirement that those using an online portal to request a mail ballot — an application option that was set up for the pandemic — provide either their driver’s license ID number or the last four digits of their social security number.
Why is it that, when this topic sees some light, everyone forgets the Georgia provision that allows the state to choose a winner by invalidating county-level results? Screwing with electoral panels is a giant leap toward authoritarian rule. It’s the key provision in the entire smelly mess.
In the face of that, I could give a shit less about water bottles and ID cards.
Oh yes! Indiana, the state that passed a voter ID law to prevent in-person voter impersonation, only to have to admit in court that there were no known cases of that type of fraud occurring (Crawford v Marion County). Also the state where, in 2012, Secretary of State Charles White was busted for Theft, Perjury and drum roll please Voter Fraud! Too bad that Voter ID Law couldn’t prevent that from happening.
