Independent Family Autopsy: George Floyd Died Of Asphyxiation

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — An autopsy commissioned for George Floyd’s family found that he died of asphyxiation due to neck and back compression when a Minneapolis police officer held his knee on Floyd’s neck for several minutes and ignored his cries of distress, the family’s attorneys said Monday.

…intoxicants…

10 bucks says Weed in his system…

Somehow I don’t think Ellison is going to let that change things…

Republicans should support these findings over that of the City Medical Examiner as we all know the private sector is always superior. We all know Republicans are very consistent with their application of logic.

The family’s autopsy differs from the official autopsy as described in a criminal complaint against the officer. That autopsy included the effects of being restrained, along with underlying health issues and potential intoxicants in Floyd’s system, but also said it found nothing “to support a diagnosis of traumatic asphyxia or strangulation.”

Unless cops kneel on a black guy to death who is in otherwise tip top shape (and 100% sober going back 30 days or however long the toxicology report can streatch), I guess it’s the black guy’s fault for not taking care of his liver, or diabetes, or whatever.

Hmm… I wonder if the SS should very publicly say the president is going to Camp David tonight.

I don’t think tonight is going to be MAGA night at the WH.

If Trump was smart he would… oh never mind. He isn’t

And capital punishment by lethal injection has been banned in many states as death took did not occur within 8 minutes and 46 seconds.

It was deemed cruel and unusual punishment…

Baden also conducted an independent autopsy of Michael Brown, an 18-year-old shot by police in Ferguson, Missouri. He said Brown’s autopsy, requested by the teen’s family, didn’t reveal signs of a struggle, casting doubt on a claim by police that a struggle between Brown and the officer led to the shooting.

That’s not entirely accurate – Baden’s autopsy of Brown could not confirm or deny a struggle, but far more notably revealed that the gunshot wounds themselves were consistent with the officers’s account, and completely inconsistent with the “eyewitness” accounts. So ultimately, despite his characterization that the autopsy did not reveal signs of a struggle, Baden’s own autopsy of Brown supported the officer’s version of events.

But in any event, I think TPM should be careful in using terms like “indepedent” autopsy. It is independent of the county authorities, yes, but it is not “independent” in the traditional, disinterested third-party sense. This is essentially a medical expert hired by the family, and while I do not doubt his credentials and experience, if one is going to question the impartiality of the county ME here (which in my experience and practice is a silly thing to do, as these are generally incredibly professional folks), then one should do the same for Baden as a “hired gun” for the family. Not saying either one of these examiners is right or wrong - I am not a medical expert – but let’s be careful with the terminology and conclusions, that’s all.

Surely he shouldn’t be outdone by a … European

Tears. At last. But too bad it wasn’t the county examiner’s results.

Your note of the GOP’s hypocrisy is true, of course.

It is literally the only thing they are consistent on.

My sense of this is that the family will eventually file a wrongful death law suit against the city and the family’s autopsy results will be part of it. It will be up to future juries to sort out the criminal/legal aspects, I suppose.

Hennepin County, where I lived for 30 years, will probably be getting a new medical examiner soon.

My hope is that His death will not be in vain.

I hope that after Hurricane Maria exposed Trump as thoroughly unqualified to deal with a Natural disaster and after CV19 exposed his inability to deal with a Global crises, Floyd’s death underscored his inability to lead and that the country starts showing him the door.

If we can look back at this as the tipping point of Trump’s downward spiral, it hopefully can be one small comfort to the family.
