From the linked article…
"Lord Frost, the Conservative peer, described the poll’s findings as “stunningly awful” for the party, saying it was facing “a 1997-style wipeout – if we are lucky”.
He said a combination of tactical voting and any decision by Nigel Farage to return to front-line politics could leave the Conservatives facing “an extinction event”.
Well, we can hope that Farage is working his same magic for you-know-who.
“We now have a Republican Party where power, divorced of any cogent, animating policy aims, is king.” Emphasis on power and king.
The GOP has one animating purpose, one plank, really, in their platform: Make Trump into an authoritarian despot. Wrecking the federal govt is a means to that end. Get Trump into power (not at all necessarily the same as “get Trump elected”) and out of the ruins he’ll build a MAGA dictatorship.
I look at the confusion and chaos as the outcome of class struggle within the party. The current GOP is in transition from one largely run by the professional classes to one run by the petite bourgeoisie who, by the fluke of Trump’s election, suddenly have the reins of power. The suits flee (see Sasse and Flake etc), the know-nothing brigade, (Greene, Jordan, Comer etc) encouraged by the lack of gatekeepers have stormed the citadel where they sit wondering whose interests they are supposed to serve. The donor base is a given but beyond that will they do anything for the Magans that put them in power?
The greater threat are the cadres preparing to take over civil service, leagues organized and paid for by the donor classes. Mr. Vought knows what he wants to do even if the clowns in the house don’t.
Reagan is the worst presidents in our history (ar least post civil war, Reagan never owned people) . His crooked victory in 1980 started nearly the same smash and grab we saw under Dubya and Trump.
Not only allowing for Murdoch to buy up media and misinform also media deregulation but also allowing more direct marketing to children, including for unhealthy food. Obesity/Diabetes epidemics…, thanks Ronnie…
Most of our current problem result from Reagan. Worse is that he got democrats to change & not admit liberalism, and eventually bedrock goals like Single payer deemed to radical and even Public insurance couldnt get support. It’s taken 35 years to start to dig out of that…
I don’t think “incompetence” is the correct word or characterization of the GOP. Actually they are quite skilled at disruption, lying, bullying, and inveterate in their thirst for power. It is very, very dangerous.
And let us add that the infotainment (formerly known as “news”) media totally eats this up. It gets clicks, unlike the boring old Democratic nonsense about sewage treatment projects, new parks, tighter regulations on corporate behavior, police oversight …
People like cotton candy and chocolate ice cream, so that’s ALL they’ll be fed!
… Incidentally, something similar has happened with the American “food” industry…
Dr. King at the National Maritime union in 1962. Quite prescient.
“Our nation is facing severe trials in these turbulent days because one region of our country still holds itself above law, as if it were cut adrift from constitutional obligations, and insurrection and mutiny against the government is still possible,” King said. “They not only abuse persons, but they debase the democratic traditions of the nation in their defiant resort to anarchy and stormtrooper rule.”
Okay. Time to take a page out of the late McCain “straight talk express”. Provide doughnuts and coffee to the reporters in the scrum. Give 'em cutesy names.
Yeah, and nobody but NOBODY watches/listens to “the airwaves” anymore. Subscriber cable, subscriber satellite, subscriber streaming. The “airwaves”, not to mention “television” itself, are totally irrelevant in today/s politics and news.
And only Fox is “fair and balanced.” Is this what you want?
They have no reason to learn they just have to say no.
They learned, or were taught, from Nancy Reagan to say no to drugs all the while she was wacked out on drugs like they are wacked out on Trunpamania.
