In Their Quest For Dominance, Republicans Break Government At All Levels

You don’t have to be any academic in the field of political science to see what is wrong with the rightwingers in this country that have taken control of the QOP.

Donald Trump lavishes praise on Nigel Farage during Iowa speech: ‘Honour to have you here’ (msn.com)

Turning his attention to the former Brexit Party leader, Trump called on Nigel to stand up in order for the crowd to show their appreciation.

“He’s been a backer of mine since day one”, said Trump.

I’m down with the opposition being a bunch of fanatics who’ve gotta have it all or nothing.
I’m even comfortable with the certainty that they’ll get nothing.
I do wish, though, there was some way to get them from throwing their food about during their tantrums and making a mess for everyone else.
Of course, the country could elect a Democratic majority and confine the zealots to the back bench and Press the Meat, which seems a fine idea to me.

The Fairness Doctrine applied to the public airwaves, because the intent was they were a public trust. TV, which is now mostly dominated by pay channels with legacy broadcasters in the minority (though the nightly news has more viewers than people give it credit for), is a lost cause – Fox News wouldn’t have been affected by the Fairness Doctrine because it’s a subscriber channel (even if it’s mostly forced down people’s throats in their cable packages or equivalent).

Radio, on the other hand, is the real shame. Broadcast radio used to have tons of independent owners who provided variety, even if some of it was weird and cranky. Then came the Clear Channels and the syndicators and any innovation – whether in news or music – has gone by the wayside.

Don Jr. sowed doubt against the integrity of Monday’s Iowa GOP caucus:

Crazy Fenak

@CrazyFenaker

Typical MAGA declaring a fraud before the Caucus even occurs. Same playbook every time. If Trump underperforms it will be the old “MilLioNs Of IlLeGAlS PartiCiPAteD In The CAuCuS. BAmBoo BAllotS. DeAD PeoPlE WeRe In The RoOm!”

Correct. The Fairness Doctrine only covered broadcast TV. I don’t see how anything similar could be done today with the scattered media everyone pays attention to on Cable TV and the Internet.

I read that column, and it was actually fairly honest and true, to the point where the writer, Roger Lowenstein, gave credit to Obama for giving tfg his “tailwinds.” But the tfg backers have no idea. So the headline should be “What Trump Voters BELIEVE About the Economy.” Which, as you say, has nothing to do with reality.

Well, that’s quite a challenge for the Biden administration.
Any ideas about how they might turn that around?

And reliably late, we get Globe political reporters shocked to discover evangelicals in Iowa increasing their allegiance to the least religious man to be president in decades, or maybe ever.

How Trump might destroy the decades-old playbook on how to win the GOP Iowa caucuses

ETA: that link to the archive site I usually use is serving sketchy ads now (boo) - here’s the actual (paywalled) Globe site: https://www.bostonglobe.com/2024/01/13/nation/how-trump-might-destroy-the-playbook-on-how-to-win-the-iowa-caucuses/

Also, we are now getting the “no true Scotsman” rationalization from evangelical leaders

“What is different now is that folks are taking on the evangelical label mainly because of its cultural connection, not because they are religious or they go to church,” said Bardwell, an evangelical himself. “And this has happened during the same period when secularism is on the rise and church attendance is down.”

OT: My wife just boarded an American Airlines plane in Seattle, and was told the toilets were frozen and unusable. WTF? I guess this is the aviation equivalent of people in Seattle not knowing how to drive when it’s snowing. Somebody get in there with a blowtorch.

I, for one, am all for these coming out. Robinson is a total crackpot. The more people who see and read what he actually says, the better.

The other candidates are also terrible, but they at least, seem sane, even as they scare the bejesus out of me.
