In The Trump II Presidency, Things Can Always Get Worse ... And Often Do

A lot of things happened. Here are some of the things. This is TPM’s Morning Memo. Sign up for the email version. The Trump II Cancer Metastasizes At DOJ I hate to break it to you, but the failure of Ed Martin’s nomination to be D.C. U.S. attorney has not produced an outcome that looks appreciably better.…

So, Trump is already dangling a drop from 145% to 80% on tariffs on China. Folding like a cheap suit. Xi and China are surely in a bind economically over all this, but I’d think Trump is putting Xi in a position of strength as to bargaining. And now, apparently, Trump is foisting responsibility for it all on Bessent? Bessent now determines the tariff percentages? If (when?) everything goes to hell it will be because Bessent effed it all up?

“Donald Trump early Friday morning posted a request to China.

"The president took to Truth Social before the weekend, writing in all caps, “CHINA SHOULD OPEN UP ITS MARKET TO USA — WOULD BE SO GOOD FOR THEM!!!”

In a follow-up post, Trump wrote, “80% Tariff on China seems right! Up to Scott B.,” referring to Scott Bessent."

I’m thinking Pirro’s elevation marks a shift into the RHODC era; I mean, Fox is running out of classic on-air talent that hasn’t already soiled itself publicly on Trump’s behalf. He’s bound to start tapping the various housewives gifted with lack of shame and scenery-chewing propensities.

Fun fact: In the waning minutes of his first term, Trump pardoned Pirro’s ex-husband Albert, who had been convicted in 2000 on federal tax charges while they were still married and she was still Westchester County district attorney.

Fun Fact: While they were married, Albert and Jeanine filed joint returns, which she also signed, making her liable for the same charges as her husband. She was not charged

Thanks, Roger Ailes. You crammed a propaganda organization full of dull mediocrities who were only supposed to influence actual Republican politicians and bureaucrats, but instead caused the next stage of devolution in the conservative movement. Looking forward to a GOP cabinet of slime molds and protozoa in my lifetime.

The transphobe phrenologists have already claimed that Leo has a woman’s skull shape and must therefore be trans. Even if they got Cardinal Burke as the new pope they’d find a way to claim victimhood.

As one commenter put it: “ Practical Atheism would be a banger of a name for a magazine.”

Me, I’m an impractical agnostic and if someone asks me to prove it, “well, I don’t know about that.”

He seems to have a . . skill? . . . for finding the worst possible person for each role. In the first go-round he hired some serious people (not necessarily qualified. This time it’s a freight train of clown cars.

I’m detecting a theme. Is it Fox, or Trump.

I feel a bigoted response issuing up from the depths, best to stop it now.

And you would think Republicans might learn from creating Frankenstein’s monster that may be they should not create anymore of those. What you got Republicans?

Republicans…hold my beer.

Martin will be at the epicenter of turning the Justice Department itself into a threat to the rule of the law.

I’m going to my 50th reunion at Brown in a couple of weeks and I will be attending forums on the universities’ response to the attack on them, as well as as cajoling my many classmates who are lawyers into what they are going to be doing about the destruction of the rule of law.
