In a tense moment after Tuesday’s debate, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) walked over to Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) to accuse him of calling her a “liar” on national television.
Another candidate, billionaire Tom Steyer, was awkwardly hovering behind the heated interaction. “I don’t want to get in the middle,” he said. “I just want to say hi Bernie.”
I believe Warren…and I have noticed that Bernie fans are being really nasty with her too. I watched that debate and thought it was boring, dull and absurd. Blitzer started out with something that happened 17 years ago and it went downhill from there. Meanwhile, Trump and his thugs are shredding the Constitution on a daily basis. Democrats need to get their priorities and their stories straight. That was just weird.
Here’s the scene: Two tough minded political pros with overlapping constituencies meeting secretly in 2018 to hash out their potential candidacies for the biggest political prize in the world. This meeting is taking place with Hillary’s loss barely in the rear view mirror.
The meeting is taking place in Liz’s DC apartment. Liz plans to tell Bernie she is going to run for President in 2020, so he should buzz off. He had his shot in 2016 and got beat badly (as both of them know, but neither would say publicly).
She says to Bernie, “Your base isn’t big enough, you carry more baggage than a freight train and you’re too old.” Bernie tells her to go to Hell and, by the way if Hillary couldn’t beat Trump, no woman can beat Trump in re-election, especially some Harvard law professor who ran behind the entire Democratic slate in fucking Cobalt Blue Massachusetts. Bernie tells her that he has a bigger contributor list than anyone has ever had, and they will contribute to him, even if they max out their credit cards and stiff their landlords. The only cult bigger than Donald’s is my cult— the Cult of St. Bernie.
At which point Liz shows Bernie to the door, calls the elevator to her exclusive luxury condo floor, says, tootaloo, “See you on the campaign trail, Bernie”. Bernie gets on the elevator, without looking back.
Let’s get back to what Warren said Sanders said: not that a woman shouldn’t be elected, but that a woman WOULDN’T be elected. The second is something I’ve thought and said at various times and I’m a woman who would like nothing better than to see a qualified woman candidate in the WH. It’s an evaluation of political realities and nobody gets that right all the time. Sanders and the media turned it into an allegation of an anti-feminist statement to the effect women shouldn’t be running. I believe Warren.
Oh man…can you imagine being someone inside the WH trying to keep that bit of psychic wounding from happening? Good lord…
Also, I am going to fully endorse your approach here: when TPM posts these shitty click-bait articles that nobody in their right fucking mind should care about, we should just change the goddamn subject and talk about anything BUT the shitty click-bait article on the comment board haha
