In Major Shift, Casey Announces Intention To Vote For Bill Protecting Abortion Rights

Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA), one of the last remaining Democrats who describes himself as “pro-life,” announced Tuesday that he intends to vote for the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would enshrine abortion rights in federal law.

Tactics against the undecided senators will shift. A major battle win. What will SCOTUS do the next time this issue is before the almighty SCOTUS once Dems hopefully will have codified this. Can the young 'uns still say not liberal enough? Will it GOTV for them? As usual, college is where you can find some voters. Students tend to be concentrated geographically too. SCOTUS and Alito will have to further rat f*ck the liberals by writing his opinion and stating his legal reasoning differently to set further movable goallines so that the conservative elite can further commoditize the rest of us.

What about Collins and Murkowski? Also, will this purely symbolic gesture in any way affect the midterms? We’ll see.

It won’t happen, but I go back to the original leaked comments. Collins and Murkowski should both go to Schumer and agree to a rules change to change the filibuster rules for this legislation and also agree to vote for the bill.

A later Republican majority congress could rescind or change the law, but it would at least do something positive.

An indication that being pro-choice is a vote getter.

Whatever his personal beliefs, I knew that he would have our back.

I posted the following a few days ago -

While Bob Casey calls himself a pro-life democrat, he is also a pretty reliable vote for abortion rights.

POLITICO

The truth behind Bob Casey’s ‘pro-life’ stand

With a Supreme Court nomination and a reelection fight looming, the Pennsylvania senator’s voting record draws scrutiny.

“I think it’s clear to most people that the description of pro-life Democrat is accurate. I’ve been very consistent,” Casey told POLITICO in an interview. “What it means is I try to support policies that help women and children both before and after birth. Part of that is making sure you are honest about differences but also at the same time trying to focus on ways to reduce both the number of abortions and the number of unwanted pregnancies, and I think my record reflects that.”

Casey’s voting record in Congress aligns significantly with abortion rights groups such as Planned Parenthood and NARAL. He has voted along with Planned Parenthood 75 percent of the time since 2011. And he voted with NARAL Pro-Choice America 100 percent of the time in 2016and [2017]…

Republican extremism forces Casey to reconsider. Why does this make me think of Putin’s aggression driving Finland and Sweden into NATO?

Maybe, but not really. See @kelaine’s insightful comments, immediately above.

I too, am hopeful that the cult is winding down.

Fox News still not lettingup on the propaganda. I’m looking at lawn signs for maga candidates that copy the spotlight stripes of the Fox News propaganda flagship logo.
With Fox news’s notorious Murdocks still providing Vlad Putin talking points, I’m pretty sure maga will survive. Dems have to wage even better lawfare than the GOP

“Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA), one of the last remaining Democrats who describes himself as ‘pro-life,’ announced Tuesday that he intends to vote for the Women’s Health Protection Act…”

This is a no-brainer for any rational adult: Voting for the Women’s Health Protection Act is “pro-life”.

I agree that if Collins and Murkowski (and Sinema) agree to break the filibuster for this, even if it is a limited bill that only restores part of Roe, Dems should take the deal. If Collins and Murkowski refuse, as I expect they would, then lets put it to a vote and run ads saying that they voted against abortion rights when they vote against the filibuster carveout. The filibuster is a bullshit excuse and we should emphasize that for the voters.

Shorter version:

Being pro-life means being pro-ALL life, not just for some.

Those who would otherwise claim they were pro-life but would allow a catastrophic pregnancy to take the life of the mother with no alternatives lose their pro-life position.

Casey has done the right thing here and it’s consistent with his legitimate pro-life stance.

I see a requirement problem for the majority of the senate - specifically references to brains, reason, maturity.

Seems Casey got tired of sleeping on the couch.

In unrelated news it seems Russia is into state sponsored smuggling of stolen wheat… A half million metric tons of grain is a lotta bread.

Ukrainian intelligence says grain stolen by Russians is already in the Mediterranean

From CNN’s Tim Lister in Lviv

The intelligence arm of the Ukrainian defense ministry said that grain stolen by Russian troops in occupied areas is already being sent abroad.

The intelligence directorate claimed that a “significant part of the grain stolen from Ukraine is on dry cargo ships under the Russian flag in the Mediterranean.”

“The most likely destination is Syria. Grain may be smuggled from there to other countries in the Middle East,” it said.

The directorate also said the Russians “continue to export food stolen in Ukraine to the territory of the Russian Federation and the occupied Crimea.”

It said that in one of the main grain-producing areas — around Polohy in the Zaporizhzhia region — grain and sunflower seeds in storage are being prepared for transportation to Russia.

A column of Russian trucks has left the town of Enerhodar, which is also in the Zaporizhzhia region, under the guard of the Russian military, the directorate claimed. The final destination of the column was Crimea, it said.

Grain was also being stolen in the Kharkiv region, and 1,500 tons of grain had been taken from the village of Mala Lepetykha in the Kherson region to Crimea.

Last week, the defense ministry said nearly half a million metric tons of Ukrainian grain had already been stolen.

This grain is last year’s harvest. Because of the war there will be no real harvest this year

he intends to vote for the Women’s Health Protection Act

This isn’t about Casey’s opinion. He’s doing what a Senator is supposed to do.

78% of Pennsylvanians want abortion legal to some degree. Only 22% want it fully banned. Philadelphia Inquirer

“This aggression will not stand, man.”

She had already said that she won’t support it. I posted something yesterday.
