Originally published at: If SCOTUS Invokes Purcell Principle to Let Alabama Use Discriminatory Map, It’ll Be the Most Egregious Abuse We’ve Seen Yet
Alabama immediately appealed a lower court decision blocking it from using a racially discriminatory map Tuesday, hoping that the Supreme Court will overturn that ruling and allow it to use a map with only one Black-majority district for the 2026 midterms. The lower court had reaffirmed its own finding from 2022 — that the map’s…
Don’t hold your breath waiting for this SCOTUS to do the right thing or at least have the paramedics close by.
“The panel clearly invoked the principle in good faith.”
The SCOTUS SIX are the epitome of bad faith. I’ll be shocked if they don’t rule against the lower court panel and in favor of Alabama.
If it leads to the worst possible outcome you know the Sanctimonious Six will go all in on it.
The Purcell principle, an idea made up and never fully explained by the Roberts Court,
Give The Six credit for consistency (See: post-racial society; major questions doctrine; presidential immunity; unitary executive; ad nauseam).
Im shocked - SHOCKED, I tell you - to find out that there is election interference going on here!!
“Your stolen seats, my dear justice”
Ahh… Thank you very much.
Martin Short is a national treasure. Nathan Thurm would fit right in with this mob.
Votes already cast based on the court drawn maps, will be tossed overboard if the S.C. rules in favor of Alabama. How can this court believe in democracy if legally cast ballots are tossed in the trash.
So, the Supreme Court will take over Alabama’s election process.
Nope. Not a political body at all.
Silver lining here: if SCOTUS has the gall (and I wouldn’t put it past them) to invoke the Purcell Principle on this one, I think we’ll see a swing in the number of Americans considering/demanding much needed reform. Be it mandated retirements, expanding the court (13 appears to be the Golden Number), rotating Justices on a predetermined calendar or whatever, the need for change and reining in the unSupremes is beginning to pick up steam.
Destroying the last remnants of the Voting Rights Act was a brazen attack on our elections and democratic representation. Burn me once, as they say. Burn me a dozen times and I’m ready to go for your throat.
The Conservative Justices on the Court have blatantly overstepped. In my estimation, the Voting Rights decision is their ‘pulling out a gun on 5th Avenue and shooting someone dead.’ Despite all the bleating about how they’re not partisan, their decisions have become a Handbook for Hypocrites.
We win in ‘26 & ‘28? Court reform must be on the menu.
In a huffy concurrence, Justice Brett Kavanaugh (joined by Justice Samuel Alito) took umbrage at Kagan’s dissent.”
Kavanaugh’s concurrence:
JUSTICE KAVANAUGH, joined by JUSTICE ALITO, in concurrence: “Hold my beer!”
Simple: They dont.
