Originally published at: ICERaid: The App That Asks You To Report Illegal Immigrants For Crypto
A new app dares to pose a question that nobody has thought to ask: what happens when you combine right-wing fervor over hunting down undocumented immigrants, cryptocurrency speculation, and Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio? It’s called ICERaid, and the idea behind it is either ingeniously simple in its pitch for civic engagement or nauseating in…
A question though, what is to prevent a bunch of people from downloading the app and reporting a bunch of people that are may be not illegal immigrants (but may be they are)?
Like a bunch of people reporting Elon Musk, or Melania Trump or…?
Asking for a friend.
Are you a wannabe Stasi informant? Are you a dupe who falls for obvious rug-pull cons? Why not both?
Behold: For Profit Fascism
Fascism has always been for profit.
I do love, btw, the fine distinction in this apparent scammer agreeing to a life ban from the financial industry and then going to work in crypto. Which is totally not financial in any way…
Inevitable.
the speculative rush around crypto combined with the fundamental authoritarian impulse
“There’s no more immigrants left! The value of our crypto is dropping. What’ll we do? What’ll we do?”
It’s trying to be the crypto version of CrimeStoppers. Without there needing to be actual proof other than “Here’s a picture of my neighbor. Look at the color of his skin! Obviously, he’s up to no good and here illegally”
“cryptography is about protecting information in the presence of adversaries”
Rule #2 … Everyone’s an adversary.
Outstanding report, Josh.
When did snitching become cool?
“they’re trusting Enrique,”
In God Enrique we trust.
This crypto crap smells like a huge scam.
All the landscapers at my condo are Hispanic (except one 30 something white guy with a Grizzly Addams beard who seems marginally in charge, but he works as hard as everybody else, on a stand-up mower)
No amount of crypto (or real $$$ for that matter) is going to get me to “check their papers” or do any of this “reporting” nonsense.
They do a great job in all weather, do the leaves in the fall, clean up any snow in the winter (which has been sparse lately - record is 31" in 1996) and prune the bushes.
They were out there Tuesday in the 101F heat.
The company should at least give them light colored shirts instead of the black sweatshirts they always wear.
Crypo is not money
It’s a scam
Paraphrasing @davidn - what if the internet does exactly the same thing that the internet did the last several dozen times these jackholes set up an online narc system?
Now, be careful, we wouldn’t want to be seen as promoting that kind of nefarious activity.
Would we?
When they started rewarding people with imaginary money? Crypto is a scam, pure and simple.
Texas abortion enforcement was the test ground for this type of bounty hunting. The law of the lawless, greedy and mercenary. Made efficient through technology, the elimination of due process, and profitably hip with crypto. History may not repeat but hard right always rhymes with fight.
Once everyone is wearing a Kennedy Jr. Fitness Watch or has a Musk chip in their brain, we will all understand.
Some time, so long ago, in the Obama years, there was great concern about
" No Soviet style informing here! Take your monitoring back to Russia." and now it’s
" I can inform on everyone all the time and get fake dollars for it. Yay! "
Start taking photos of women with protruding stomachs and getting 'possible abortion seeker ’ crypto coin.
Gosh, I wonder if anyone would have liability for falsely claiming that someone else was in the country unlawfully.
