The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency shut down a hotline for detained immigrants in early August after it was mentioned in several episodes of the Netflix series “Orange Is the New Black.”
They were helping immigrants, and for free. Obviously they had to be shut down. Coming soon: a government designation of those responsible as a terrorist organization.
The nonprofit’s executive director, Christina Fialho, and its hotline director, Cynthia Galaz, sent ICE a cease and desist letter last week blasting the agency’s “impermissible retaliation to the organization’s First Amendment-protected expression.”
“The hotline’s termination also creates the clear appearance ICE is attempting to silence critics and limit the public’s awareness of alleged abusive conditions in immigration detention,” they wrote.
I guess Stephen Miller watches “Orange is the New Black”
If Miller and Trump get their way the indefinite detention of minors would not be subject to outside oversight.
When various progressives were advocating shutting down ICE, I was skeptical, but not any more. Enough has come out to persuade any but the most ethically- challenged that this group of people is toxic.
Somehow detainees in ICE custody don’t have due process rights, or something like that. I’m trying to figure out if one is a foreign national here on a visa they have the same rights if arrested, but not those that cross the border to ask for asylum.
ICE shut down something that would help immigrants? I’m shocked, hang on a second while I collect my winnings…
I have a feeling that we will be shocked once another administration takes over and we get real visibility into what has been going on in the immigration centers the past four years. ICE really needs to be broken up; we do need to handle immigration and protect the borders, but they have crossed way over the line and institutionalized being cruel towards immigrants, and that has to go away. I don’t see how that happens without breaking up ICE and terminating the officers that pushed for the system to become as awful as it is.
Everyone on American soil has due process rights…it’s the reason Republicans have fought so hard to keep Guantanamo open and try terrorists outside of our territory, once they step foot in country they get due process rights. It doesn’t matter how they get here, it’s the law (in the Constitution actually). They want to keep the immigrants in Mexico so they don’t get rights, and they are fighting very hard to close down all oversight of the detention centers so they can get away with whatever they want, including sending people home without giving them their rights. It’s also in the fight to get immigration judges to process cases quickly, and change the rules for immigrants, so they lose their rights effectively.
It’s pretty shady as it is…we have little kids, even babies, who go in front of a judge by themselves to defend their case for asylum. That’s not due process, that’s not even close to the protections the Constitution guarantees to all people in America, and it’s damn shameful.
AOC was entirely correct that we need to disband ICE.
It’s only slightly better than the Gestapo or the Stazi, and the constraints on them going fully there get looser every day.
You can’t “fix” a thing like that, you have to rip the bandaid off and get all of the diseased and infected bits out before you can start something new.
Sadly, it seems that when Miller, Trump., et. al., forced illness and death on children ICE has taken from their families, it was a test of what America would tolerate. And it worked. They’ve expanded their disgusting plans. And now, they are emboldened in a way that no decent American would want to believe, and we should all be ashamed for that.
