When William “Bill” Lapschies celebrated his 104th birthday with his family over chocolate cake and his favorite pizza on Wednesday, he wasn’t just marking another annual milestone in his long, full life. He was also celebrating a full recovery from the novel coronavirus as one of the oldest-known survivors of covid-19 in the United States.
In early March, Lapschies and a small group of elderly tenants living together in a state-run veterans’ facility in Lebanon, Ore., started feeling ill. They were among the first Oregon residents to test positive for the coronavirus, and Lapschies’s family worried the illness would prove deadly.

I know someone in Hospital Administration for a very big hospital chain. Yesterday I learned that Hospitals make money off surgery. That’s what is profitable. There is currently NO surgery happening in their hospitals. They are beyond busy, but they have no money. SO the talk is of cutting the salaries of the people who are working like heroes to fight this disease on the front lines.

Last seen pledging to block a bill if it included extra money for unemployed workers. I believe that was his first official act after self-quarantine ended. He’s either slunk back into the weeds or is being assiduously ignored since then.

Right, there are surely more naval and other military commanders dealing with dire or soon-to-be dire situations. This heavy-handed action is a powerful warning for the others–be quiet, keep it hidden.
