Not too long ago, Democrats had some reason for cautious optimism about the balance of power in Congress: State-level reforms, combined with demographic changes and other factors, meant that Democrats appeared poised to come out of this redistricting cycle in relatively okay shape. That was far from a preordained outcome — especially given the ferocity with which Republicans have historically approached drawing maps.
I don’t really care what people think anymore: if rigged fake democracy that produces permanent minority-rules white supremacist Christian dominionist neofascist hegemony isn’t enough for you to agree that violence is necessary, every right they take from you is deserved.
Political violence is the enemy of democracy. Might doesn’t make right.
We cannot abandon democracy to save democracy.
Though I understand your frustration, nonviolence, organizing, and the rest of the tools of creative political power are very, very far from exhausted.
More conventional wisdom bull crap. The Alito draft changes everything. The Democrats will pick up seats in the House and Senate. The passion has changed, that’s what wins elections.
Stop with the “we’re gonna lose” nonsense already, take a look at the big picture, it looks ugly for the Republicans.
I don’t remember where I read it, but gerrymandering is supposedly a brittle fix, its success based on past trends but overwhelmed by significant changes in voting patterns. Roughly half of voting Americans were just handed a big shit sandwich by the Republican party. If the article I read is accurate, then I don’t think the midterm map looks anything like what we’re being told.
Some day, we will read about how Alito’s draft created a rift in the Republican Party, and threatens to suppress turnout for these Puritanical bastards.
One piece of good news is that Trump’s name isn’t on the ballot. There’s a chance that some of the votes he energized in 2020 won’t bother showing up for the midterms. It’s the downside of a personality cult.
Combine that with women outraged about what the SCOTUS is about to do, and I’m ignoring doom and gloom predictions. At least for now.
Can’t we add the part where they’re doing all they can to make sure the vote counters and vote certifiers are all in to put Republicans in office, regardless of the actual vote counts.
Just to make us feel better about things.
Vote. And get as many people as you can to vote Democrat up and down the ballot. This really might be the last election we have a chance at making things (close to) right.
I’m not letting that one move my doom and gloom meter either. The backstop is that vote tampering is illegal, as some of these clowns may soon find out.
I know the comeback is going to be that it doesn’t matter when R’s control the elections office, the state AG and so on. But think about it. Changing the outcome of a state election – throwing out legitimate ballots – would require competency and total secrecy. Something I don’t think these fools are capable of. If it’s exposed, then people are going to prison for violating Federal if not state laws disenfranchising voters. That’s a pretty strong disincentive.
