How Rep. Dan Goldman's Office Became a 'Triage Center' for ICE Detainees

Originally published at: How Rep. Dan Goldman’s Office Became a ‘Triage Center’ for ICE Detainees - TPM – Talking Points Memo

It began in the spring, when Rep. Dan Goldman (D-NY) went to work and “saw a dozen masked ICE agents in the lobby” of his office building.  “What’s going on here?” he recalled asking, incredulously. “What is happening?” After the initial shock, the congressman and his staff saw that the masked Immigration and Customs Enforcement…

“We don’t control the immigration system. We don’t control the courtrooms, but we have some power and we are going to aggressively use it in every way we can as a force for good,” Goldman said. “And so, little things like that where we can use our authority to counteract against the lawlessness from ICE, we’ve done it.”

The next time someone tries to tell you that all politicians are bad, remember Congressman Goldman.

In this holiday season we should all remember Exodus 22:21 “Thou shall neither vex a stranger, nor oppress him, for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt. " King James Version, “You must not mistreat or oppress foreigners in any way. Remember, you yourselves were once foreigners in the land of Egypt.” New Living Translation.

Of course there is the version from the Modern Christian Nationalist Bible. ---- “Attack, rape and pillage all those damn foreigners especially the brown ones.”

Shemot (Exodus) - Chapter 22:

20 And you shall not mistreat a stranger, nor shall you oppress him, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt

Vayikra (Leviticus) - Chapter 19:

34 The stranger who sojourns with you shall be as a native from among you, and you shall love him as yourself; for you were strangers in the land of Egypt. I am the Lord, your God.

Goldman - January 2027

“When we take over the House — and I am confident we will in November — come January, 2027, you can bet that there will be — we will open a number of investigations that very likely will lead to impeachment,” Goldman said.

I have nothing but respect for Rep. Dan Goldman. He could be President some day. He’s that good!

Question 1 Why are they masked?
Question 2 What are they afraid of?

Goldman also referred the ICE agent who pushed her for criminal prosecution. ICE subsequently indicated the officer had been “relieved of his current duties,” but it provided no specific information about what this meant. Days later, CBS News reported that “two U.S. officials familiar with the matter” confirmed the man was back at work.

IANAL so I’ll ask our resident lawyers: The ICE agent has clearly been identified. That being the case, and since it seems no one is going to prosecute him, can he somehow be sued in civil court?

Civil actions appear to be the only way these monstrous thugs will be held to account.

I like him too, but he is also a first term congressperson who will be facing a tough primary next year against Brad Lander, a long-time and beloved fixture in NYC, especially in Brooklyn.

New York’s 10th District covers part of lower Manhattan and a larger part of Brooklyn. Whoever wins the democratic primary will definitely win the general election next November.

Three years on, the Manhattan Democrat is in the fight of his political life against New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, a liberal challenger backed by prominent left-wing figures like Zohran Mamdani and Bernie Sanders. In his campaign launch earlier this month, Lander declared: “We need leaders who will fight, not fold.”

“I’m running for Congress because we’re facing a five-alarm fire for our democracy” Lander declared in his mid-December launch video.

Goldman is among more than two dozen congressional Democrats battling serious primaries this year — a surge that party insiders attribute to a wave of emboldened liberals across the country who watched Mamdani’s unlikely rise and remain frustrated at their party’s struggles to fight back against Trump…

I think he’d have to show a lot more leadership on the genocide in Gaza to be in that league. Nevertheless, this is great work and he should be commended for this.

What’s happening with the MM? There wasn’t a weekender either. Have our publishers suddenly become religious or something?

I’m guessing they’re taking a holiday break. I’ve also missed the weekend and evening news fixes, and have decided to not even look for the “Morning” memo until lunch. (Yes, yes, I’m in the Mountain time zone…)

That’s a very long description for “Democrats who don’t think a Trump endorsed rapist represents them.”

I’m not a New Yorker, but I was disappointed that Goldman refused to endorse NYC’s democratic nominee for mayor, refused to endorse the choice of his own democratic constituents. I think that both he and Schumer, who both live in NYC, made a mistake. They could have easily bypassed the whole Israel/Gaza issue in a well-crafted statement that focused on local issues.

I am a New Yorker and this silliness of running a democratic candidate against should stop. Endorsing Mamdani or not has nothing to do with it. Anyway how will the new mayor do? Are you sure he is going to succeed? I don’t.

I didn’t know that you live in NYC. Are you in Goldman’s district?

Considering the difficulty finding enough thugs to recruit for Miller’s pogroms, it’s not surprising that the brutal ICE agent was back on the job a couple of days later.

No not in his. Are you?

I already said that I’m not a New Yorker.

Though as you know from the NYC mayoral thread in the Hive, I am interested because my daughter lives in NYC. Specifically, she lives in Brooklyn. She lives in Flatbush, and her current congressperson is Yvette Clark. Prior to that she lived in Bed-Stuy, and her congressperson was Hakeem Jeffries.

As for my question to you, it was not meant to be combative. I was just wondering if you had more personal, more informative, and more direct interest in the Goldman vs Lander primary. I enjoy learning from my fellow TPM community members, and sometimes it even influences and/or changes in my views.
