How One Family’s Meal At Whataburger Morphed Into An Anti-Immigrant Talking Point | Talking Points Memo

In a filing in federal court Monday, the state of Texas argued that Gov. Greg Abbott (R) was justified in ordering state troopers to pull over anyone they thought was driving undocumented immigrants — because of one family’s meal at a Whataburger in South Texas.

Immigrant scapegoating versus White privilege.

That is Republicans in Texas are doing everything possible so White people can freely spread the virus and then are blaming it all on immigrants.

Am I missing anything?

In a more rational world, sick people would be treated for disease so it would not spread through the rest of the population.

WTF? When I was a kid, eating at Whataburger was the whole purpose of going to Texas.

Right. These SAME RW aholes have been on TV (Tuckums? I’m looking at YOU!) saying you don’t NEED the vaccine or masks and that it’s an AFFRONT DAMMIT to require them but they blame ‘immigrants’ for the spread of COVID because ‘caravans’ are being released into the wild. Got it. Consistency was NEVER part of the Republican brand.

I have not been to La Joya TX in like 30 years. In the 70’s and 80’s it was a town of 400 that was notable for having exactly one white resident, the cop, yes just one man made the police department, and I guess he was expected to earn his keep and he did by setting a legendary sped trap in his town.

Racism in Texas, what’s new.

I’m convinced that the US, particularly the south, have the highest per capita rate of stupidly in the world. The numbers have increased dramatically since Rump and are now exploding. Can Biden stop that? I doubt it. It’s built in the algorithm.

Not true. When I lived in Texas, Whataburger used REAL eggs to make egg sandwiches, scrambled, eggs, etc. for breakfast.

Cows and Mexicans, as American as Mom and apple pie.

Someone said that once. Somewhere.

Everyone agrees.

What treatment would that be? If you can still breathe unaided, you quarantine until your symptoms pass and you are no longer contagious.

At a press conference last Monday focused on the Whataburger incident, La Joya Police Sergeant Manuel Casas was asked whether members of the public should call the police if they saw “any member of society” — not just immigrants — exhibiting signs of COVID-19.

“We don’t necessarily–” Casas began before pausing. “That’s something that we won’t necessarily be focusing on.”

In other words, we’re just focusing on brown people that cough in public. Actually, just brown people. Well, anyone that isn’t white.

In general, peoples’ stupidity goes unnoticed until they open their mouths or otherwise advertise what they are thinking. Social media are a great amplifier of intellectual dimness.

I’m really worried about those 100,000 immigrants making their way to Sturgis. Can nothing be done about the immigrants?

As honorable and trustworthy as Greg Abbott is, and without any suggestion that he might be using his position to advance a right wing agenda that is intended to change the subject from the fact that his policies have cost Texas untold resources and have killed many people who would otherwise never have contracted the virus, here is an alternate possibility: a–lets just say “brown” family was eating in a Whataburger in the vicinity of some of the hotels used to shelter immigrants who had tested positive. One of the kids sneezed or coughed. HIs or her sibling started teasing about how the kid obviously had covid, and because no one in the entire country has coughed or sneezed due to any other reason in 18 months, and because another family at the Whataburger really hated the idea of having to eat in the same place as the “brown” people, they flagged down a police officer and proceeded to make it a case of sneezing while brown. In the past few years we’ve seen news stories and Tweets about people who have assumed that any person of color who is in a place that the white person doesn’t like being harassed, beaten up, and arrested, accused of stealing cell phones that had been drunkenly left in Ubers, had their UPS delivery truck blocked in while the driver had to prove that his or her company ID was valid, and who knows how many other abuses from people who have decided that they are going to be the great white hope and help cleanse the country of the source of all of our problems. And now we are supposed to believe Greg Abbott and his heart wrenching story about a family who was forced to eat in a Whataburger with people they didn’t like.

You can get your Whataburger fix in New Mexico, and New Mexico is a much safer place than Tejas: 2/3 of the population has at least one dose of vaccine and 55% are fully vaccinated. New Mexico doesn’t allow concealed carry by any asshole who wants to, and doesn’t allow firearms in bars or schools.

Thank you.

In fairness, someone with early symptoms can be treated (via IV infusion) with monoclonal antibodies (Remdesivir Regeneron) at $520 $1250 a vial. The usual course is 10 vials ($12500). Plus the cost to get the stuff into you. Call it $25,000 or so overall. Bethesda Naval Hospital did it for TFG.

(Editorial note: when I was working with bench biologists, I learned there are two types of biochemicals. The first kind you buy in metric tonne (1000 kg) lots. The other kind you buy by the milligram. Clearly Regeneron is the second kind. H/T to @thunderclapnewman for correcting me on Regeneron vs Remdesivir, which an expensive antiviral. )

Justice called for that motherhumper to die of his epidemic, but the western marketing manager for this spiral arm was out to lunch when TFG got sick.
