Antifascists were fighting with their far-right rivals. An anti-immigrant group with surging membership took to the streets and clashed with the police. And a member of the Trump family was at the center of it all. The year was 1927. On Memorial Day, 99 years ago, the celebrations in New York City turned violent. The…
Well, I guess we know what side of World War II Fred Trump was on. I wonder how bad were the things that Fred Trump didn’t get arrested for..?

From the article:
“…the Klan, which has officially sharply declined in size and membership in recent years but whose sympathizers are ever more public…”
Fixed that (bolded) for you.
Good article for Memorial Day weekend.
This is what I believe and I do not expect anyone to agree with me.
After helping to care with Vietnam wounded for 3&1/2 years and seeing the graves of our wars and not one has a POS Trump on a tombstone.
During our 250 years not one fucking Trump did nothing for our Country except take what others sacrficed for.
To the 70 millon+ who voted for this asshole don’t ever say you believe in our Country. You suck!
There may be more empathy for your position than you suspect.
[The very end of the (very good) article]
“My husband’s comment to him, I’ll never forget it … was, ‘I’m just here to keep you honest,’” Ellen recalled with a laugh.
Keeping the patient honest?
He’d have to start out that way, first.
Either way, it would be a labor worthy of Hercules.
A few comments. Jamaica in the late 1920s was still more a part of Long Island than NYC. The IND had not been built and it was still pretty far from Manhattan. And Jamaica was still pretty largely white and Protestant (though South Jamaica had a growing African American population. ) The Klan in the 1920s was as anti-Catholic as anti-Black and I have long suspected that the reason the Klan demonstrations were stopped is that they angered the heavily Catholic police force, with Klan members complaining of “police brutality.” Good for the cops!
Great story, Hunter. Nice work on the research as well.
“under cover of darkness”
Donald likes to foster the impression that he operates in plain sight. But he doesn’t. He hides, like the Klan, sneaking through the dark, well-covered, hunting like on an African safari.
“. . .still appealing very much to a kind of (?) anti-black component.”
Thanks for an honest article. Although many of us would like to tar the elder Trump with the KKK brush, we are honest enough to look at the evidence. Of course the later housing settlement is part of the record too.
More like Sisyphus.
I’ll concede the point.
Was not Fred Trump also associated with the infamous 1939 Madison Square Garden Nazi Rally?
Fred was a racist bag of shit who idealized fascists and strong men, but i cant find any credible links that say he attended the 1939 MSG nazi rally.
Please feel free to prove me wrong.
Thank you Rob!
This is a good point - and that suburban nature/proximity to Long Island made it a natural target for Klan inroads to the five boroughs. In fact, as I was reading archival materials here, some of the references to PO boxes and other addresses referred to Jamaica as Long Island while others did not. NYPD jurisdiction was clearly a key factor though that seemingly posed an issue for Klan growth.
I made sure to note that up high! It is an important part of why this story gained so much interest. Also helps us understand the family even if the Klan was more of a footnote to his story.
i’m so old i still believe you know a person by the company they keep,it seems the trumpfs have always been low-lifes…KKK bck in the day and NAZIS to-day…the current trumpf is following in his fathers foot steps, he is bloated old freak. why do so many evil old men originate in the north east?
lol, as the old saying goes…if the shoe fits, wear it.people make choices, D, TRUMPF chooses to be what he is,
