‘How Are You All Still Doing This?’: Pundits Roasted For Painting Trump As A Newly Tamed Beast

My newspaper had an AP report of the surges in the virus at every "rally " stop he made in the past few weeks. He is killing his base! And they are too damn stupid to see it.
Keep it up Donnie! This may be the most important service you have provided this country.

And I hope the ghost of Edward R. Murrow haunts him to his dying day.

This phenomenon should be headlined by major news outlets. It would get clicks and eyeballs, and has the added advantage of being important and true.

Right. In 2019 Nate Silver had a piece that showed that the median individual income was about $43k, the median income of the Trump supporter was $71k. That’s a substantial difference (and that was median, not average, so it corrects for the billionaire plutocrats who support Trump).

Yet all we heard from the media in 2017 was the myth of “economic anxiety” driving these poor folks to support Trump. They could not, and would not say the unmentionable: it was racism, xenophobia, beggar-thy-neighbor, and sheer rancor and ill-will that drove these people.

I will be a little more charitable to the pundits. Lets leave out the 80+% of the country are sentient human beings and less than 2 weeks from an election are already committed to voting for Biden or Trump (didn’t say all of them are rational sentient humans - but at least after 4 years of Trump (and 8 years of Obama/Biden) they know who they are going to vote for). That leaves 20% of the country who are totally clueless and are watching the debate to help them decide who to vote for. Among that 20% are a not insignificant number of people who want to vote FOR Trump - either because they agree with his policies or they like the usual blustery Trump - but they have reservations about voting for someone who comes across as totally unhinged. For those people, by not appearing to be the crazy homeless man yelling out bizarre conspiracy theories (instead, as someone said, he used his “indoor voice” to espouse the same stuff), he gave them (i.e., voters who already wanted to vote for him anyway) one less reason not to vote for him. In that sense he “stopped the bleeding” but one would hope that a good number of the 20% of undecideds were people who are already inclined NOT to vote for him and for them, he did nothing to help himself. His avalanche of lies and total lack of human empathy (regarding COVID and regarding treatment of immigrant children) was on full display. So yes, he stopped hemorrhaging the support of people who really want to support him, but that is all he did.

Same with W. Bush who had his struggles with the demon rum while claiming that he went cold turkey yet they still used the nice guy you’d like to have a beer with.

“It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.”

And this is one of the more blatant examples of Sinclair’s observation.

It’s not a socialist rant. We were taught the same thing in business school – in both my undergraduate and b-school economics courses, we were required to read “The Jungle.” Beats hell out of “Junk Food Nation” – my daughter still has a phobia about pork after reading this in high school.

exactly…talking heads need to talk,or they don’t get paid…pundits gotta pund, or they don’t get paid…CHUCKIE TODD is an example of both.

I was watching Morning Joe and they had someone on who gave Trump a B- and Biden a C+ for last night. Basically Trump “won” because he didn’t act like a crazy person flinging poo

That’s how low the bar is for Trump and how high it is for Dem/Biden. Biden didn’t win because even though he had facts and policy and talked to the American people he didn’t land jabs and zingers.

I had to turn it off :rage:

I’m so out of step with the Village Insider culture, I should probably watch some snippets of the Sunday morning gabfests if only to see what hasn’t changed.
Obama never tried to lie us into a war, and Trump would prefer to just get bribed, but that bumrush architecture is still there, waiting to be utilized.

Years ago, pundits used to debate the points candidates made and who won the argument. But they were very inconsistent in being right about who the average viewer thought won. Average viewers cared more about body language and tone than the pundits realized. So they all tried to become body language experts and over the years have convinced themselves that whoever comes off as ‘dominant’ won. They’re as wrong now as they were then, but they haven’t corrected for any of their stupidity these days. THey don’t think most people even pay attention to the words anymore, which is just stupid.
Whatever, debates barely matter.

Well, yes, I’m nothing if not obvious!

Thanks for this observation.

Maybe more that I haven’t watched TV in many years. But there are people out there who have insightful things to say and zip it when they don’t.

I have to say that DRACULA was the only time I found Gary Oldman HUBBA HUBBA and isn’t ‘that’ odd; I guess it’s the choice of his films.

This is what we should be talking about this morning. Our government ripped children away from their parents and now after 2-3- yrs is unable to locate the parents of 545 of those kids. The agencies shrug their shoulders and Trump says “good.” Joe said it was criminal.

The MSM would sit on Pinnochio’s face and scream “lie to me” over and over if they could.
