The far right group “Diagolon,” which has American allies and the attention of authorities on both sides of the border, is at the center of a fiery political debate.
WTF? It seems you know nothing and are too lazy to find out. True, there are some stupid people up here in the cold dark north but your comment lends me to think that there are plenty in your country.
Our national papers have been writing about this phenomena for quite a while. I’ve posted links to articles in the Hive.
Sadly that is true - I live in Seattle and British Columbia (BC) is the West Virginia of Canada. Step out of Vancouver, and the revanchism and desperation of the extreme right is there to see.
Americans have no idea how precarious the situation is for liberal democracy in Canada at the moment. Poilievre (PeePee) was an awkward, basement dwelling culture warrior who had his image (indeed his face) expertly remade into a barely palatable candidate who spew bitter culture war nonsense non-stop. Our press is weaker and less diverse than in the US. Only a few oligarchs control most of the mainstream media outside of CBC (which itself has largely cowered into submission from 2 decades of right wing assault, like PBS and NPR) and they all support PeePee and have been relentlessly trashing Trudeau and mainstreaming RW conspiracies for the past 5+ years. Our multiparty, first-past-the-post electoral system and the unity on the right and division on the left mean that PeePee is almost certain to be our next PM, with barely 35% of the votes. In Quebec, the left is almost dead (like in France). The sovereignty movement, which used to be of very socialist leaning, has rapidly morphed into a xenophobic and mostly reactionary movement. The party in power (CAQ) is cynically competing with the rising PQ to see which of the two devise the most vile and divisive policies to attack immigrants, English speaking communities and anything that is not rural, French or white enough. The Trump presidency has given a lot of ideas and permissions for Canadian right wingers to find and embrace their inner fascists. Meanwhile, former Conservative PM Stephen Harper continues to pull the strings and, with the IDU, which he leads, exchanges tactics and plots behind the scene with other autocrats such as Orban, Modi and Netanyahu. There will be nowhere north to go for Americans after a Trump victory.
And the worse is that, unlike in the US, there is no alarm here about the threat.
I’m worried about the swing rightward and the rise in anti-democratic rhetoric here in Canada, but I do also see some signs for optimism.
Last fall in Manitoba, the ruling provincial Conservatives, clearly borrowing from the Abbott and DeSantis’ playbooks called an election and ran on promising stronger “parental rights” for those who disapprove of LGBTQ+ kids and their parents, deep tax cuts that would guarantee the underfunding of the province’s social programs. They also ran nasty personal attack ads. The results were a solid victory for the provincial NDP (Canada
s social democratic party). The new Manitoba premier, Web Kinew, is the first First Nation person to be elected premier of one of Canada’s provinces.
New Brunswick, where I am, is Canada’s demographically oldest and most rural province. It is also Canada’ s only official bilingual province. Our Conservative premier, Blaine Higgs, whom also, I swear is getting daily emails from DeSantis, decided last year to go after a provincial education policy (Policy 713) that establishes the minimum guidelines for insuring that all public schools provide a safe, welcoming, inclusive environment for all students, irrespective of gender or sexual orientation. The end result has been that several of his cabinet ministers have stepped down or been pushed out for expressing their discomfort over the changes and the anti-LBGTQ+ rhetoric coming from Higgs and his current Education Minister; experienced Conservative members of the Legislative Assembly have announced that they won’t be running for re-election (the next provincial election must be called by this fall). Several provincial school districts, the teachers’ and school psychologists’ unions have expressed their displeasure with the governments’ changes in policy and one of the largest Anglophone school districts is now suing the province. The Canadian Civil Liberties Union and various other groups are also suing the provinces. The government has responded by doubling down and threatening to dissolve the suing school district’s education council.
Higgs was going to call a snap election last fall (just like Manitoba) because he believed, I think, that attacking trans kids (who have been the focus of most of his scorn) was a winning strategy. However internal party polling apparently revealed that he would go down to defeat just like the Manitoba Conservatives; he also said he might call an election this spring, but the numbers were not looking better and so he has held off. What probably would have been a easy election for Higgs has been undermined severely by his year-long attack on trans kids, his clear contempt for NB’s francophone, First Nations communities and the working poor, and his autocratic and micromanaging tendencies (which have alienated members of his own caucus). Maybe Higgs will still win in this fall (when he has to call an election), but if he does, I think will be a weak minority government – he’s really angered a lot of people across party lines and languages.
was raised in rural NB., I hate to see AMERICAN politics foul NB…I’ts been along time since i’ve lived there, the only AMERICANS we ever saw were people who came to fish[salmon] or hunt…the locals referred to them as american ‘loud mouths’ @@
People in Canada accept as a given that they will not incur debilitating health care costs. That might be a good place to try to explain to the rednecks that, like in the US, the RW will be after their healthcare next. Think of the cost savings, etc
Holy shit! I had no idea about most of this until I read your post.
My wife and I have some friends and family members who live in Canada and because of the healthcare and humaneness of many of their policies we have deluded ourselves into thinking it was somewhat idyllic. It is painful to realize, once again, how easy it is to poison the entire well with a few drops of culture war nonsense and relentless RW media.
