House Republicans on Tuesday viewed the chamber’s upcoming vote on legislation to remove Confederate statues from the Capitol as an opportunity to accuse Democrats of trying to “erase history” and boost their hysteria over so-called “Critical Race Theory.”

I understand that to the Republicans this looks like a strategy, but I don’t see why they think it is a winning strategy.
Before someone says I’m missing the obvious – I know, I know, this appeals to the white supremacists/base of the Republican Party.
But even the dumbest Republicans (I’m looking at you Greene and Gohmert) must know by now that the base is really, really, small. Like, really small, like 1 in 5 voters small. And this will do nothing but alienate all other voters.

Also, calling Robert E. Lee a Democrat would have been news to the general himself. The military officers of the time mostly avoided party labels. But the alternative-facts GQP can’t be bothered with such trifles.

That would be pretending that Confederates were NOT g-ddam traitors who took up arms against the United States and committed freaking treason!
Republicans honoring criminals who murdered American men in uniform are the one trying to “erase history”.
And they can shove their treasonous aid-and-comfort to America’s enemies up their memory holes.
The GOP is now fully on board with the “support white supremacy” movement.

Kevin’s hoping people won’t remember that many (most?) of the southern Democrats (Dixiecrats) changed parties starting in 1948 or thereabouts. (Strom Thurmond, Jessie Helms, Thad Cochran, Trent Lott, John Connelly, Phil Gramm, Richard Shelby, …). Others making that switch include Ronald Reagan, Donald Trump, and Mike Pence, just to name a few.
It also ignores the Republicans who became Democrats like Howard Dean, Jay Rockefeller, Hillary Clinton, John Lindsay, Chris Coons, Elizabeth Warren, and Gabrielle Giffords.
Can we spray McCarthy with plastic sealer and remove him from the House?

Of that 1 in 5. If asked, how many of them will proudly stand up and be recorded as white supremacists? I will go with “not many”. It is hard to muster a presence on issues like that when most of them do not want to be known as part of that crowd. So defusing them on the individual level is relatively easy.
