The House Judiciary Committee, still fighting in court for former White House counsel Don McGahn’s testimony, suggested Monday that it was considering articles of impeachment in addition to those adopted by the House last Wednesday.
“Dear McGahn: are you REALLY willing to roll the dice for your liberty against a favorable SCOTUS decision? Or do you wanna cut a deal while you still can?”
This was the obvious answer. I’m looking forward to Judge Neomi Rao and other Trumper Judges attempting to establish the principle that courts can review Congress’ prerogatives which are further underscored in plain English in the Constitution by such phrases as ‘The House shall have the sole power of impeachment’ , but only when the goal is to protect a GOP President.
All of this stuff should be laughed out of court. Pelosi is laughing at all of them right now because the Courts intentionally kicked this can to force the Dems hand on impeachment, and all Pelosi did is execute her game plan which keeps yielding Dems more political capital, legitimacy and power to push forward. The Courts will have to back down and acquiesce to the Dems if they want to maintain any shred of credibility. Or, they can decide that Trump is the conservative white man’s last stand and go down with the ship. Either way Trump is impeached and Dems are positioning themselves for a big win in 2020 (subject to Bernie Sanders ceasing his war on the ‘Democratic Establishment’, whatever the heck that means).
I will repeat and restate wherever I can, this standard Bernie line from his stump speech should be disqualifying for every Dem voter.
If Bernie can’t figure out that the ‘Dem establishment’ (which he has more power over than actual Dems do) is far different than Trump/GOP then he simply cannot meet the moment that the times demand. We cannot waste time on self-serving power grabs and bad faith framing. That’s all this rhetoric is from Bernie and too many Dems buy his bs. If we want to win, Dem voters have to reject this nonsense from Bernie and his followers.
“I don’t give a damn about Liz Warren’s emails but she gave speeeeeeechesss!!!” Bernie ain’t gonna survive the primary but he will once again stick with his slander on the Democratic candidate who does win the primary and his cultish supporters will go along with those “clouds of suspicion” hanging over the Warren-Biden whoever’s campaign. Sanders refusal to quit when he was so resoundingly beaten by Clinton is a big reason we now have the dotard as POTUS. He and Gabbard will once again split the vote I’m afraid.
The “us v. the Dems” insurgency delusion needs to die a horrible death, and it will do so one of two ways: by them waking up and realizing they’re not the majority and that we need each other OR by them succeeding.
I’d greatly prefer the former. And yeah, you read that right…nothing could be worse for their survival than their total success.
I wonder if the time hasn’t come for the House to put a bit of its own pressure on the judiciary. The filings should muse openly about the legitimacy of our democracy being open to question if the courts, in a historic partisan shift, were to make oversight of a Republican president all but impracticable. The House is not involved in an academic investigation of the scope its power. It is seeking to address the national security and constitutional crises in which, in the House’s constitutional judgment, the country finds itself. (This is why I’ve long thought it important that Pelosi pass resolutions to this effect.) For the court to substitute its view of the matter for the House’s view, in circumstances when the House is acting without caprice and with all the facts on its side, and find that the McGahn subpoena dispute does not require extreme expedition, would be to potentially undermine the constitutional credibility of the courts.
Republicans are always yelling and raising the stakes. Democrats are always trying to model a decorous political status quo that no longer exists. It’s time the GOP judges felt the heat from both sides.
uh, where do you get the idea that McGahn’s liberty is at risk? Its not – unless he were to defy a SCOTUS decision, which there is ZERO indication that he would do.
If the House was serious about this, they would have dusted off their inherent contempt powers by now. But this is all just preening – by not petitioning to have the case leapfrogged directly to the Supreme Court (and not even asking that th Jan 3 hearing be on the merits – including questions of executive privilege – instead of just having a hearing to decide whether to hear the case at all, which is what the current spate of filings is all about) the House has signalled that they are happy with a relatively leisurely pace here . They just want to pretend there is urgency, without actually demanding that the court treat it as an urgent matter.
This message brought to you by corporate Democratic establishment hacks…
I don’t support Bernie, but the Democratic establishment is an impediment to beating Trump. It’s more concerned with protecting incumbent than advancing progressive ideas, and it alienates potential Democratic voters who see the Democrats as a party more concerned with helping rich people than working class and poor americans.
And for Bernie, the path to beating Trump is through the Dem establishment and its corporate paymasters.
Who is the Dem establishment? Pelosi and the House Dems who just impeached Trump and passed over 200 pieces of legislation that are widely popular? Is it President Obama? Who is it? What corporate paymasters? Dems get a substantial amount of their money thru Act Blue, which are individual grassroots donations.
Are the big money folks who donated to the DCCC that enabled Dems to have a massive fundraising advantage over the GOP which was a big factor in that win also an impediment to beating Trump/GOP? Seems to me as if those Dem fat cats deserve a lot of credit for impeaching Trump.
You have no basis or substance to these arguments. These arguments are bad faith marketing scams intended as a power play to elevate Bernie Sanders and his so called left. What is left btw? Are abortion rights, voting rights and gun control left? Bernie/Warren rarely emphasize those issues. So are they fake lefties then?
