House Democratic leadership is considering whether to create a special committee that would probe President Trump’s alleged conversation with the Ukrainian president about former Vice President Joe Biden, Politico Playbook reported.
It occurred to this morning that this administration would not be above trying to forge a counterfeit phone transcript. Or even a WB complaint … and then claim the real one is the fake. That’s what I consider plausible in this administration.
Yet it also seems likely that somebody, here or there, would have recorded it. Which could lead to, ironically, Ukraine holding all the cards in our next election.
Not that I think you’re wrong, but I expect them to go with the stonewall approach. It’s worked for them so far.
Hoping that Dems do go with this Special Committee and have it meeting by the end of the day. Subpoena everything. Today. When they hit that stonewall, file suit by the very next minute.
Getting the transcript will not be enough. As David Frum notes:
Also, Chris Christie chimes in about seeing the transcript and thinks we’ll find out what was really said. As someone else noted, if Trump knows his call is being monitored, he’s not going to come right out and say what he wants. It’ll be more like “Nice country you have there. Be a shame if something happened to it.”
Hmmm. No. Let’s see the whistleblower’s complaint, TYVM.
Special committees are what I’ve been rooting for all along.
I think three of them would be good. One specifically for “Emoluments and Financial Crimes” (That would require his taxes) . One for “National and Electoral security” (This would delve into the Mueller report and also cover the new whistle blower) and one for “OBSTRUCTION” - basically a commitee to chase down all the subpoena jumpers.
These committees should TAKE THEIR TIME. Yes, move ‘toward impeachment’ immediately - through carefully structured and totally DEDICATED IMPEACHMENT INQUIRES. You don’t have to hold the impeachment process til late next year. Let these select committees bleed him dry as the case is built.
Just a reminder on the Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Counsel-
They are not mentioned in the U.S. Constitution.
They are not elected.
They cannot create laws.
Their opinions usually reflect the political climate and the implied wishes of their leadership.
And at present they are the government body that is preventing the criminal prosecution of Donald Trump, and the release to Congress of a Whistle-blower claim involving National Security against Trump as well.
My opinion- their job is to manufacture legal justification for unethical and possibly criminal activity by the administration.
Maybe the “mulling” should come from voters who think a few democrats should be replaced with some people who can push forward with a more aggressive agenda. This is not the time to be timid.
