x 1,000 mr. newman!! That’s the real fear for me. Those 60 million of my fellow muricans who voted for the buffoon and continue to support him.
I think it’s even simpler. I’ll get called a pessimist, but what am I missing here? They smell unchecked power, and they want it. You eliminate meaningful congressional oversight by acquitting the Mutant-in-Chief. You get a 6-3 court should our national treasure RBG die. Tighten up the gerrymandering and vote suppression, interfere with the 2020 elections, and you realize the dream of a unified government in thrall to the .1%. We still have the same flag, but it’s a Republican country. The rest of us just live in it until they get tired of the irritant.
They will do it because they can. The more they get away with, the bolder they become. And the president is about to get away with being an open criminal.
OT, but a good read and topic for discussion.
.
The parties owned their own newspapers and they were a volatile and ugly mix of made-up scandals, vicious and accusatory rhetoric, and content shaded to conform to party positions.
How did one avoid becoming a target of their vitriol? By remaining bland, malleable, and largely unnoticed. They forced those who couldn’t become their party hacks to at least float around in the mushy middle.
None of this was good. Bad faith became the operative political morality of the day.
The resistance is alive and well in a new generation. Olds like us will die out and they will rule the day. We may not see it in our lives, and the republicans may yet destroy us all, but if our country survives, it will be free once again.
ALL three of our kids are scientists. All are pursuing paths to bring them into policy making circles. All of them are hella tired of this bullshit and know (or are learning) what’s needed to turn our society around.
That isn’t nothing and it’s something to put hope in. Our kids don’t have the patience with this shit that we did, not do they have old angry white men in such numbers that they can do anything about it in say 10 years or so.
Declaration of Subservience
We the undernamed and the Americans we represent, in having declared fealty to Donald J Trump and all he stands for, and yielding reason, facts, understanding and logic to the musings of the KGB, Vladimir Putin and the will of mother Russia, do hereby declare the power of the presidency is for personal use, enrichment, revenge, and subverting the Constitution of the United States. We sign this statement with pride knowing history will record our names alongside American luminaries such as Benedict Arnold. We accept full ownership of the outcome of this willing subservience. Oh, and it’s only OK when a Republican does it.

You don’t think that once the tables are turned they all won’t develop the political amnesia we see so prevalent right now?

I think there are a lot of psychological truths there regarding self-reinforcing beliefs and closure to contradictory evidence. We’re living through a society-wide experiment in it.
Jeez, I certainly hope not but it’s hard to deny - out of hand. And I don’t think you’re talking organized religion or faith-based or purpose-driven bible study bullshit. The rise of technology has given everyone the opportunity to live in their own personal bubble, and not so much by choice anymore, where we’re able to avoid most conflicts directly. Sounds like a life style worth living but it can make reality more difficult than it already is. So we discover “closure to contradictory evidence.”, feel self-assured and continue on our way, no longer sure what we believe has to one day be resolved.
But Trump and his criminal enterprise of psychopaths, oligarchs, big church pastors, billionaires, and nut jobs like Bannon will force us all out of our too busy two jobs consumer driven both sides do it mentality - because we can’t go on like this. It has to happen.
And the references to Fascism are apropos since the Nazi example shows how one can push people incrementally to extreme positions that they might initially deny they could ever support.
Over the last three years, the GOP has incrementally been reduced to the worldview of a pre-school bully. Jim Jordan as their leader is a microcosm of Trump as the country’s leader, naysaying every argument by shouting while putting his fingers in his ears. And Barr’s speeches are actually right out of the early Nazi playbook, using a claimed decline in religious morality as an excuse to justify substituting authoritarianism.
Then there’s this:
And Barr’s speeches are actually right out of the early Nazi playbook, using a claimed decline in religious morality as an excuse to justify substituting authoritarianism.
Much like Putin did in Crimea in 2014, sending in “little green men” to disrupt everyday Crimean life, seizing ports and facilities, followed by Putin sending Russian troops into Crimea - to restore order and “liberate” ethnic Russians living there. Annexation complete.
Yeah nothing that is happening here is happening in a vaccuum. It’s happening all over the western world. To stop it we have to get to the bottom of it - Putin. Putin’s money is doing this.
“The evil men do lives after them. The good is oft interred with their bones.”
Shakespeare, for one, knew this very well. Trump’s evil (and that of his followers) will live on indefinitely. Although he’s hardly alone on the issue of climate change, those responsible for causing and ignoring the problem may very likely cripple - or destroy - human civilization for centuries (at least).
there’s at least a 50-50 chance that your own analysis is wrong
I try to remind myself of this constantly ; - )
You’re right. Nice article. Thanks.
Clearly the Russians have something deeply dangerous to trump and they’re playing him with it and gaining hugely by it. I have wondered what the kompromat is. A pee tape is small potatoes seeing as the world knows trump’s character. No, whatever it is must be epic. Truly epic. So big that it would shatter trump into little bitty hunks of quivering golf balls. Whatever it is it’s a secret buried in trump’s closely guarded super secret server that nobody knows exists (of course). trump knows, the Russians do too. Who’s gonna blink? It will come out one day. And if trump is in office then he will be hounded out of town after being tarred, feathered, peed on and humiliated.
OK, I have seen enough of Louie Gohment and Matt Gaetz for one day … even with the sound off. I wonder how Nadler manages to keep his temper under control.
