It’s not the entire answer but it’s a major part of it. Fuck this Court. The only reason we’re here at all is because Congress [edit: that’s Congress historically; I’m not calling out the Dems] won’t codify these rights. So, let’s vote, gets Dems in office, and make actual, explicit laws enshrining rights so the hacks on the “Supreme” Court can’t pull Constitution-based hogwash out of their asses.
The only positive thing about this is that the SC may have handed the Dems the absolutely thinnest of lifelines to avoid a wipeout in the midterms. If this doesn’t wake up undecided and independent voters concerning what is coming next, I don’t know what would.
And women of color? Because this decision really affects them more than it does white women…
Kicking the dirty work to others to get what they want is the Republican way. SCOTUS to the states. States like Texas kick it to vigilante mobs. Zero is the new Eleven.
From this week as you recall.
Such efforts came after Trump lawyers had washed their hands of the endeavor and handed it over to unofficial advisers like attorney John Eastman. Justin Clark, a top lawyer on the campaign, described efforts to create fake electoral slates in the states where the campaign had no ongoing litigation as “inappropriate,” while Matt Morgan, the campaign’s general counsel, said he wrote in an email to lawyer Ken Chesebro that “you are responsible for the Electoral College moving forward.” Morgan said in a taped deposition aired during the hearing that “that was my way of taking my responsibility to zero.”
And I got screamed at on this site for saying the same damned thing not two days ago - ‘blaming the victim’, I believe, was the screed. My comment was that with several Democratic Presidents and several Democratic Congresses, this wasn’t done when the chance was available.
I actually ended up blocking one person over the ensuing attacks.
“I trusted Justice Gorsuch and Justice Kavanaugh when they testified under oath that they also believed Roe v. Wade was settled legal precedent and I am alarmed they chose to reject the stability the ruling has provided for two generations of Americans.”
The argument is inherently trivial. Judges handpicked by the Federalist Society to overturn Roe vs. Wade overturned Roe vs. Wade. What good faith actor could be surprised?
Well… think of it as a constitutional right for ammosexuals to perform post-term abortions.
Pelosi Reacts With Stale Call For People To Vote
What a fucking idiotic headline. What would be a “fresh” call? Ordering an armed assault on the court?
JFC
Yeah, Senator Manchin is “shocked” now. And he’ll be “shocked” when the next hammer falls from the trumped-up Supreme Court. But he’ll still keep voting with his Republican oppressers, much like “troubled” Senator Collins. Because they just can’t quit that former guy.
I think there are further controversial decisions to come down.
But will the voters believe that any elected official can overcome these controversies?
That should happen next week, no? They aren’t done handing down decisions.
Tor, of Viking Cruises will institute new routes to the fjords for Masterpiece Theatre watching ladies in a family way.
Hopefully he will have the courage to actually say the word ‘abortion.’
Will women who want to be sterilized be allowed to have tubal ligation? Any woman who does not want more children is advised to have the surgery before that is no longer legal.
Manchin is surprised too.
I’m going to give her the benefit of the doubt, as her headline was shorthand for Josh’s point.
All Democratic office holders need to emphasize the specificity of protecting abortion rights as the motivation to vote. And they need to promise that they will codify abortion rights by law in 2023, and promise to kill the filibuster to accomplish their goals. They need to say it explicitly, and repeatedly, and while I am forever grateful to Nancy Pelosi for her leadership, she needs to do more in this moment.
That’s something that ought to be stressed
nonstop. Pregnancy and carrying a child to birth isn’t always some “do ya nine” procedure. You can have a variety of medical maladies from septic shock to ectopic pregnancies and miscarriages.
If they love to cite the founders there’s the Ben Franklin home abortion kit.
To clarify, I mean Congress in general over the decades. Culturally we’ve gotten too comfortable with SCOTUS rulings, because by god they looked pretty sturdy! But they aren’t and never really were. The safe thing is always to pass the law. Even more recently when the reality was becoming clearer, the Senate is a roadblock and overturning the filibuster for legislation is still a relatively new idea.
You do realize that Congress could pass a law tomorrow enshrining abortion rights, within 24 hours the republicans would take it to a friendly federal judge who would enjoin the law, and within a few weeks this supreme court would kill it as unconstitutional using the shadow docket.
Quit victim-blaming here. There’s no fucking magic cure that “if only the Dems…”
