Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) officially declined to run for Senate Tuesday, putting an end to a high-profile pressure campaign spearheaded by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY).
Hogan, like Sununu, realizes that the party of trump does not have a long-term future - especially once the January 6th hearings begin.
He still has Presidential hopes too - but needs a GOP purged of trump, DeSantis, etc, if he hopes to succeed. And not campaigning for the Republican nomination for the Senate seat during the same time the January 6th hearings are going on allows Hogan to put some distance between himself and the current party leadership.
[Also, since Maryland borders DC and the Maryland National Guard was an early responder on January 6th, Hogan may have a better feeling for some of the things we’re going to learn from the committee.]
But the dysfunction of the chamber, paralyzed by the filibuster and hyper-partisanship, has so far turned off at least a couple of candidates who would have eased their task.
I’m having a VERY difficult time believing that McConnell hasn’t pledged to Hogan & Sununu that he would abolish the filibuster if Republicans retake the Senate. At least up until right before the next election in which case he would restore it after all the damage had been done. So maybe @greylady has it exactly right:
Gov. Hogan quoted as saying he calls 'em like he sees 'em. He should be asked if 1/6 insurrection and preparations (like fake electors) for insurrection were "legitimate political discourse. Either answer is a winner.
Sununu and Hogan have to deal with the Republican party which in the near future will either be 1) the party of TFG or 2) be completely gutted from in-fighting with people of the TFG. Add to that they would need to fight the potential negatives of the January 6th committee and criminal arrests, while still sucking up to the GQP.
Swimming in a pool full of shit is not interesting but to the full hardcore corrupt GOP politician that basically wants to stock it.
