Hogan is my 2nd term governor and I did not vote for him either time (no surprise there). But a lot of blue MDers did–they are not uncomfortable with the income equality seen here as long as their privilege is protected. A few of them even voted for Trump in 2016 due to outright misogyny…
Hogan is trying to set up a “sane” viewpoint for the pro-UberCapitalist GOP that needs some sort of social stability to continue their hold on the economy. Hogan is hoping to draw some money from these folks, hence the book. They will use him as a role model to show that GOP can be nonthreatening and hey, may let them keep the Senate.
Great to hear the thoughts of a Marylander - a place I have never been and have only seen through movies and TV shows. Great as it was, I am pretty sure The Wire doesn’t tell me everything I need to know.
When I hear people like Hogan and Kasich speak, I always think the reformed slave owner really regrets having owned and profited from slaves. I do not buy their bullshit for one second. Hell, there are a lot of Democrats I don’t trust - why the hell would I trust these guys?
Who would have thought that in the 21st century, the United States, founded at least partially on the principles of the Enlightenment, would have another trial of Galileo?
Yeah, The Wire, great as it was, was not a complete picture of Baltimore.
I am also a Marylander, and I would like to remind everyone that Larry Hogan is not a moderate. He cancelled a long-planned transit project in Baltimore that would have actually helped the city. Most of his legislative accomplishments involved letting bills become law without signing them, or having his vetoes overridden by the legislature. He was accused this February of using roads projects to benefit his real estate development business, though everyone seems to have forgotten about that now.
I’m not sure why his op-eds in USA Today are even news, but here we are.
To an extent it’s why ogres like Dick Cheney support gay rights – because it affects THEM, or at least THEIR family.
But you take what you can get for tactical reasons. As I’ve said in another thread, the most important imperative in military strategy is having as many allies as possible: particularly when one faces an implacable monster like Trump and his hordes of Zombie death-cultists.
That does NOT mean you believe Kasich or Hogan are the latest incarnations of Mother Teresa or Dorothy Day. Anymore than Eisenhower was under any illusion about the Russians, or Admiral Darlan, or Marshal Badoglio. But he needed a coalition to fight the Nazis – if THEY won, the game would have been over.
And, yes, the stakes are that high. Given how Europe is teetering on the brink, with, at this moment, Viktor Orban blackmailing the EU over coronavirus aid, China has forcibly taken Hog Kong, etc., it’s pretty grim. If Trump remains in office, it’s game over for democracy globally.
