Several congressional Republicans on Sunday called on Attorney General Merrick Garland to justify the search of former President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort last week, following Garland’s announcement that he “personally approved” use of a search warrant for government documents at the resort and moved to unseal the warrant, absent objections from Trump. Prior to Garland’s announcement, Trump and his allies knocked the DOJ for taking a few days after the search to release the warrant — a move that Trump could have done himself.
Or do they want something that will cripple the investigation and allow them to engage in yet another Big Lie for the benefit of cleaving their Death Cult further to them?
Am I perhaps a bit biased to think it’s mostly Column B here, people?
Let them keep wanting, just like they could be wanting Trump to go the hell away while having to pretend he’s still their Golden (Showers) Boy so they don’t manage to snatch defeat from the jaws of disastrous-for-America victory.
They mostly want a way to:
a) not stick their necks out too far in support of Trump, because this shit is bad and could easily get worse
-and-
b) not have to admit their initial performative hysteria about “unjustified searches” or whatever was silly, because Trump will attack anyone who ceases to defend him. Once the outline of what was stored at Mar a Lago became public, the initial faux-outrage didn’t age well. Some of them surely want to climb down, but can’t (in their view)
So asking for vaguely defined “answers” about the investigation – which they know Garland won’t provide, since it’s an active investigation – is their way of squaring that impossible circle. Pretending to defend Trump, and “not backing down”, without doing anything substantive.
The level of bad faith here to be demanding answers from the DOJ rather than Trump is astounding… But let’s be real: they only want those answers so they can figure out their next attack on the DOJ. There is simply no way the DOJ will ever be able to give them enough that they will turn on Trump. I can see it now… “So Trump only had 10 top secret documents with nuclear related information??? It’s not like he had 20!”
GQP wants to be on the investigation team. Haha. Kash Patel advised continued investigation and indictments then prison when criminals have been caught. Kash Patel said (on 5-22-2022) give the investigators more time. I think we know what would happen. The GQP will tailor their Russian talking points to whatever info is shared. Share after TFG is tried.
Send the Republican caucus a color photograph of the eleven cardboard boxes and a sampling of the restricted documents seized at Mar-a-Lago with the notation ‘In answer to your question.’
Mike Rounds: "But I think it’s very important long-term for the Justice Department — now that they’ve done this — that they show that this was not just a fishing expedition.”
They found classified documents - lots of them, including TS/SCI - as a result of executing a lawful, properly obtained, based on probable cause, search warrant. By definition and by result it wasn’t a “fishing expedition,” you fucking twit.
ETA: A “fishing expedition” would be more like, oh I don’t know … maybe a 7th or 8th Congressional investigation of Benghazi when the first 6 or 7 have turned up nothing.
JFC. There were National Security documents stored at THG’s private business. A business open to the public. That has visitors from all over the world.
