Hegseth Orders 500 More Troops to DC in Wake of National Guard Shooting

80 dead so far?

Just spitballing here, but if this is an Afghan who immigrated here in 2021 then he may well have all kinds of deep seated grievances with the US military. Big question may be is it directed at the exit deal tRump made with the Taliban or is it more towards Biden who inherited that ? Considering the horrendously shabby treatment we heaped on the Afghans it could be any number of things

Also, where did he get the gun?

Legally? Illegally?

Perhaps ATF agents should be enforcing gun laws?

Yep. The shyt has hit the fan. Islamophobia, immigrant phobia, brown phobia…and all the Afghan vets in NG…incendiary. For some odd reason I feel he was hired by Stephen Miller with Hegseth blessing.

Plus a rehash of all the finger pointing of just who was responsible for us leaving so many of the Afghans who had assisted us behind when we left. Shooting people is never justified but this guy may have some legitimate beefs with the US military. Way too soon to say but it’s going to get very bad very soon

So MAGAts will see it. They don’t do traditional media.

Didn’t I read somewhere recently that among the various immigrant populations whose refugee status that TSF was threatening to revoke included Afghans? I can imagine somebody being pretty pissed if they’re being threatened with banishment to the Taliban, who could be expected to not be “very welcoming” to those who’d helped out the Infidels.

If not, then the theory that it’s someone with just “regular” grievances also makes sense…

Indeed. It’s not looking good though. He was likely an Afghan refugee when he arrived in USA in 2021. What made him travel from Washington State to DC…it sounds like LeeHarveyOswald…all planned by powerful folks.. Miller, Hegseth & Vance.

an already tense nation further on edge due to the increasingly fraught environment we live in

It wasn’t fraught last year.

Republicans suck.

If the subsidies expire, premiums are expected to significantly increase for millions who rely on the program

Especially MAGA.

I believe the Afghan’s name is Marinus van der Lubbe.

Getting info from CNN so maybe not the best… but they are reporting the suspect applied for asylum in 2024 and was granted it earlier this year. So asylum granted by Trump admin tho I’m sure the spin will be it was Biden’s fault

This is akin to the state of Texas sending in the Rangers and other law enforcement agencies after the Uvalde massacre. It’s mostly performative and feel good about themselves.

In my opinion, it would be smarter to decrease the National Guard presence in DC. To zero, even, as various judges have ordered. This incident, details of what happened and why have not yet come out, seems to be an indication that uniformed military strutting around the streets is not, in fact, calming. It seems to have increased resentment, and caused citizen violence.

I respectfully refer you to my previous post. He provokes violence in order to commit even more violence. Small mushroom penis energy shambling its way through life pretending to be big dick energy.

Of course you’re right. But Trump WANTS to provoke violence, so he can have the excuse to blame immigrants for everything and ramp up the repression. At some point, he’s going to try to invoke the Insurrection Act , suspend habeas corpus, and impose martial law.

And its started… In many ways then worst possible suspect but only because he is someone tRump can use as a strawman for so many things. He is already blaming Biden and calling for every single Afghan to be interviewed again. Even tho it was his administration who approved his asylum…

It may be that the shooter held long-term grievances against the US and was improperly vetted. But as of yet we have no information to support that, and yet the talking heads on CNN and even MSNow are assuming that may be so. People change - he could have become increasingly psychotic or paranoid, he could have been angered by events in his own life after arrival in the US, no one knows yet. If his skin was white, mental health would be a top excuse, but it’s not, so it isn’t even considered in the differential for what might have happened. But hey, it’s another opportunity for Trump to hammer on immigrants, even though his administration is the one that approved his asylum claim! His ranting tonight ranks almost up there with his video on January 6. It’s sickening to see this racist bastard disparage immigrants in that manner.

Watching Trump’s reaction to the DC shootings of two members of West Virginia’s National Guard, you see how he reflexively tries to turn the incident into a PR win, especially by bringing the discussion back to immigration, Biden and Muslims. Brad DeLong, in the tariff context, finds the same thing with Muslim-majority Malaysia’s understanding that any tariff “deal” would have to generate some PR value for Trump, for whom perception, rather than actual economic benefits, matters most.

The most you can say about the “deal” is that it is a recognition by Malaysia that the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must . Except that, under Trump, “the strong do what they can” does not cut it, for the meaning in Thoukydides’s Thoukydides, an Athenian, wrote the history of the war … is that the Athenians will do whatever is to their advantage. But in the case of the Trump administration, the Trump Administration will instead do something completely random, but its actions can be somewhat shaped by giving it the PR bonus of an apparent “win” of some kind.
