Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) accused President Donald Trump on Friday of using the US Postal Service as “a scapegoat if the election doesn’t go his way,” amid concerns about election mail delivery and suggestions by the President last week that he would block additional funding to the mail service in order to hamper mail voting which he sees as unfavorable to his re-election prospects.
“Manchin said that his state has been particularly hard hit as many residents in the largely rural state rely on the postal service for the delivery of medication and other essentials.”
Trump to Base: “Everything I told you gullible rubes was a total lie! I hate you!! IDIOTS!!!”
Trump Base (above deafening applause): “Four more years! Four more years! Four more years!”
This is actually a big development. Senator Manchin - a Democratic lawmaker in a deep, deep red state -has been able to hold on to his seat only by keeping his antenna exquisitely tuned to the wants and needs of his constituents. He’s not the sort of man to get ahead of his skies. If he’s saying this, you can bet Trump’s gambit isn’t playing well with his own voters. That there is strong bipartisan anger towards him.
Who knows? Maybe he can’t get away with shooting someone on 5th Avenue?
The Board of Governors of the United States Postal Service today announced its unanimous selection of Louis DeJoy to serve as the 75th Postmaster General of the United States and Chief Executive Officer of the world’s largest postal organization. DeJoy is an accomplished business executive with more than 35 years of experience. As Chairman and CEO of New Breed Logistics, DeJoy spent decades in collaboration with the U.S. Postal Service, Boeing, Verizon, Disney, United Technologies and other public and private companies to provide supply chain logistics, program management and transportation support. He is expected to begin serving in his new role effective June 15th.
Not seeing a whole lot of government experience or public service dedication amongst this “motley crew” of USPS board members as required by law as I quickly peruse their career history . And the fact that they were confirmed by the Senate only means that McConnell shoved them through on a partisan 51-47 vote.
"The Act also added professional qualifications for the governors. The governors are chosen to represent the public interest generally and cannot be representatives of special interests. Not more than five of the nine may belong to the same political party. They shall be chosen solely based on their experience in the field of public service, law or accounting.
You can bet UPS, Fed Ex, and others see very little profit in small, rural West Virginia, and probably depend on the USPS for at least the last mile. Without a functioning USPS, there’s probably no Amazon for them either. It’s literally a life or death matter there.
It would have, but we weren’t going to flip the Senate. The math just wasn’t there. This year, it’s in reach. In 2 years, we should be able to solidify it.
