Vice President-elect Kamala Harris said on Thursday that last week’s attack on the U.S. Capitol by a pro-Trump mob was reminiscent of the violence seen in Charlottesville, Virginia, during President Trump’s first year in office that has roots in a long history of terror by white supremacists.
I can’t agree more. One of most horrific images of the Insurrection was the assembly of the gallows. Not only was it a heinous symbol of oppression but the fact that they were materially prepared was a sharp indication of their intent from the onset; this was a planned attack.
Looking forward to many metaphorical heads rolling.
I’m hoping Vice-President Harris will continue to be this vocal and this direct after being sworn in and President Biden puts her front and center. It’s not enough to acknowledge the truth of racism in the US, it needs to be repeated until we can evolve as a country beyond such poisoned roots.
Somewhere, burning crosses will come out, and I bet they were prepared somewhere for January 6. Look at the flags during the demonstration. Vice-President Harris will be running this gauntlet for the rest of her time in office. President Obama reminded us of the dignity and value of the Presidency, I’m hoping VP Harris will speak harder truths back to the public.
Kamala Harris in my view is correct and that Trump did not create his base but rather the GOP base created Donald Trump. Or, as has been said many times, the overwhelming support for Donald “grab her by the …” Trump by White Evangelicals proves that “values” in front of the word voter is and has always been code for race.
The only reason Trump supporters believe the election was stolen and that Trump won in a landslide is that the GOP has been catering to White Nationalists who believe the winner of an American election is whoever gets the most votes from White people.
And before. But it didn’t become the perversely cynical modus operandi of the Republican Party until after the Civil Rights Act ('64) and the Voting Rights Act ('65).
It’s important to remember that prior to FDR the Republican Party had a Lincoln lock on the Black vote - when, where they could vote. It wasn’t until Goldwater and then Nixon’s Southern Strategy that the Ds were able to harvest a substantial majority.
And then followed the purge of Democratic pols in the South. And to this day, there are still Republican pols pushing the canard of Democrats being the scourge of Black agency (and, presumably, getting away with it).
Harris is right. It’s not that this is shockingly new. Racism and political violence are a part of US history. The issue is scale. We haven’t seen racism threaten the federal gov’t like this since the Civil War. What’s different is the scale as there is literally a traitor in the WH who is a white nationalist and is trying to break the Republic that has moved away from its white nationalist roots.
