Yeah and he couldn’t have named either.
Harris was my first choice—and after her dynamite announcement rally, I thought she had a good chance.
It’s now clear that she’s not going to make the cut to even enter the top tier.
So a graceful exit now seems to be the best path forward for her.
Precisely. How many black kids did she put in jail or juvie detention because they had a joint in their pocket? This is her problem. Lot’s of spew in here about “vision” and “clear paths” but that’s pundit boilerplate. Her problem is what she was when a prosecutor in California turns people off. She was an aggressive DA and that’s just not what progressive America is looking for on a résumé.
I agree with you about her support of currently unpopular positions in her past. The two things that bother me most about it, however, are that 1) Her past positions seem less about ideology but rather who had power to help her and who didn’t, and 2) Her updated positions don’t seem to be driven by any personal enlightenment but rather to be more in tune with current values. In other words, she is a weathervane.
Agree, and too many white males were never going to vote for her. She’d make a great AG or continue to be a great Senator for California and for all of us on the Judiciary Committee.
I guess if you’re not qualified to run a campaign you’re probably not qualified to run a country. She will make a great cabinet secretary.
Just because someone doesn’t get the nomination doesn’t mean that they were a bad candidate. The Democrats have a number of capable people running. The reason the Harris campaign doesn’t have a strategy to win Iowa is that there is none. It wasn’t going to happen, for reasons that have more to do with Iowa than Harris, probably. If she ran a respectable campaign and made a good competent showing with a decent base of followers she could have been in line for a VP slot, that was the best she could do this time. If she wants to try again she needs to go back to the Senate and really prove herself over time and see if she can gather widespread national support. The field is about to start shrinking, and enough of the fiddling around. The Dems need to consolidate their resources and get ready for the main event. Because it’s not going to be pretty or easy.
Weathervanes occupy positions in a full 360 degrees. They’re supposed to. Polls are not supposed to do that. I think you’re point is well made.
I agree. And also, I don’t think too many black females were going to vote for her either. In the beginning of her candidacy, she tried to gin up enthusiasm for the “First Black Woman President” but being born to wealthy academic parents (both with PhDs) and being half Hindu wasn’t going to help her identify with most American black women.
She made 2 fatal errors in the second night of the first debate. She went for the home run with the race card and she raised her hand on the eliminating private insurance question, just like Warren did the night before. She was my second choice before that debate. After that,I had/have no second choice.
I would say she is a very typical politician—intelligent, skilled, but completely run of the mill in her skill sets.
I don’t think she has what it takes to lead at the national level.
The dude who founded BET said none of the current Democratic candidates can beat Trump. Wonder if he’s jumping in next ?
Plucky was telling us from the beginning that black people (especially black males) wouldn’t vote for her because of her history as a DA.
She had a long way to go to build support
I think Biden would beat Trump. I’ve lost all confidence in Warren. I can’t stand Sanders, but he might be a contender.
I always liked Harris for Pres or Veep. I’d love, I mean love, to see Harries go after Trump on the debate stage. Maybe next time.
45 people were sent to state prison for marijuana related offenses while she was DA, most likely in conjunction with conviction for more serious crimes, and/or for felonies to distribute large amounts.
Possession of less than an ounce was decriminalized in CA before Harris was D.A., and people didn’t get arrested for smoking their private stash. I suspect most of the arrests in SF during Harris’ time were along the lines of street dealers with more than an ounce on them. The vast majority of such arrests didn’t go to trial let alone result in serving time.
She was my early favorite, but I knew she was in trouble when she waffled on whether and how much to support M4A, and she seemed too afraid of “progressives” to push her strength as a prosecutor. Just too indecisive. As it turned out, she’s not capable of managing a large national organization either, so it’s for the best if she drops out and focuses on the upcoming Senate trial.
Regarding a role as AG in a new Dem administration, she would probably be great, but we need her more in the Senate. She’s better there than Tom Steyer, who according to NYT that article is thinking about running against her in 2022.
I’m guessing zero.
Success has many parents, yada yada yada…
IMO “waffled” is the key word here.
I think Harris is relying far too much on polling instead of taking a stand on issues and making a stand on issues.
The political winds have changed with the voices (and donations) of more progressive people who are well aware that dramatic changes are needed. The old play book just won’t cut it anymore.
