A lot of things happened. Here are some of the things. This is TPM’s Morning Memo.
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) wants his Republican colleagues who’ve been running a million miles away from his 15-week national abortion ban to know that he’s heard their concerns about how it’ll wreck their midterm prospects–and he says: IDGAF.
Is Lindsey Graham a DNC plant? Is he a double agent (Putin/DNC)? Obviously, I am joking, but what he is doing now simply doesn’t make any political sense.
I am not someone who believes in Royalty though my wife has been up since 0500 watching the pageantry.
What we agree on is this is history and quiet respect that is shown by a large group of folks from all walks of life.
Long queues no fights or trash.
Something to be learned here?
Well… it kinda does. His proposed Federal Ban lets Republicans Candidates who need to do so, put daylight between themselves and the GOP’s long-standing misogynistic healthcare policies. It gives them the talking point: “I oppose a Federal Ban on Abortions”, which has the net effect of making them appear less extreme than they really are.
Democratic candidates need to keep the focus on Roe, Roe, Roe Your Vote this Roevember.
Personally I think Joe has made a mistake in calling the COVID pandemic over. It’s a politically expedient move but not one that could backfire on him.
I am certainly not fit to be any sort of moral arbiter. However, the Gov. DeSantis stunt of deceiving desperate migrants and shipping them off to a blue state to score political points may be the single most depraved action I have ever witnessed conducted by a U.S. pol.
Excellent point. However, the majority of GOP pols seem to be in agreement that abortion is the last thing they want to be discussing 2 months away from the midterms. He has practically forced every GOP pol running for statewide office to take a public stand on this issue. You might be right, but I don’t get the impression that Sen. Graham is a ‘3rd level thinker’!
I think he’s being smarter than the rest of the Republicans, frankly. He looked at what happened in Kansas, realized that total bans are going to cost the Republicans a lot of seats and power at all levels if this continues.
So he’s offering the way out for forced-birthers who *really" didn’t think things all the way through to conclusion, and a compromise on 15 weeks.
He hopes that will bring wavering people back on board.
OT:
Saturday’s Goshen News carried the Indiana State Police report on the deaths of Rep. Jackie Walorski, two staffers, and the driver of the other car.
Walorski’s staffer, who was driving fast, drove up right behind a flatbed, braked, and then zoomed out to pass, head-on into the incoming car, which presumably had no time for evasive action.
Damn high price to pay for being in an important hurry.
ETA, two lane highway, speed limit 55, but every time I’ve driven that road at 55 I’ve been tailgated, and had people pass on a double yellow line.
Depravity is the foundation of the GOP’s entire platform, such as it is.
Devotion to Dear Orange Leader.
Immigrants are sub-human.
Women are property; rapists have an absolute, God-Given right to choose the mother of their children.
(In my humble opinion, the GOP’s stand against abortion, even in the face of ectopic pregnancies, and permitting women to die, counts are far more depraved than shipping a bunch of people to a place where they got treated reasonably well.)
He’s just getting technical. Like how the WHO waited months for it to spread and kill tons of people before getting around to declaring it a pandemic.
Now it’s endemic, still spreading and killing people, but generally stabilized and with treatments and under control.
Think of it like wildfires. Early parts are the pandemic, running wild and out of control, once it’s considered contained, it’s no longer in a pandemic phase, even though the wildfire may still continue to burn for months.
Here we’re probably stuck with it permanently, just like with the original flu.
The only thing I can think of to explain how this makes political sense is if Lindsey’s, um, long-rumored extra-curricular activities are about to become public finally.
If you may be the Republican Kevin Spacey of South Carolina, trying to suddenly become Captain Fetus might be your only shot at distracting your constituents.
And here’s the worst part of it: we all know it is wrong. We all know the deception was intentional. We all know it deserves investigation.
We all know nothing will happen, because of the fear of blowback from the minions and for fear of giving InSantis a platform for additional cruelty which his supporters adore him for.
