Governor-Mayor Standoffs Over Reopening Amid Coronavirus

Governors and mayors of major cities nationwide are at odds over when and how to reopen their states amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Our county commissioners mandated masks in essential businesses and public transportation a week ago.

Wonder why Patrick didn’t go off on us? Maybe because it was the entire county commissioners court that voted on it.

Ordering people to wear masks is the ultimate government overreach, but ordering them to go back to work in unsafe conditions is just fine.

It is in times of crisis that a government’s worth is revealed. The mayor-governor standoffs demonstrate who really cares about the well-being of the governed.

In the case of Kemp, my low-IQ governor, his declaration defines the situation really well. His edict to open select business revokes local government measures. He makes it crystal clear who he cares about: President Orange.

He’s one mean motherfucker - just look at his face.

He’s virulently anti-choice but thinks we should sacrifice granny and the weak to Wall Street.

Yeah, I guess you saw him saying, “There are more important things than living.” And yet, he’s a big pro-lifer. What a hypocrite.

My governor just announced that businesses will be allowed to open May 4th, with social-distancing limitations. My company asked me in a survey if I felt safe going back to work. I told them no, not until epidemiological metrics showed the virus was controlled and we had widespread asymptomatic testing available in our state. Not just because the governor or mayor says “back to work!”

The reason the governor gave for opening things back up is that our healthcare systems are not overloaded. No shit, Sherlock, they’re not overwhelmed because we are all staying at home. Why do I need this umbrella, I’m not even getting wet! Goddamn the GOP is stupid.

Harris County Exec Judge Lina Hidalgo has been nearly perfect thus far in her rulings and edicts.
Total of 82 deaths in a metro area of nearly 7M? What a great reason to send people out to mingle.

Fuck Dan Patrick.
Go drink a vanilla bleach-shake. Die tomorrow.
Most of Harris County (Houston) would cheer.

If Georgia’s a peach, then Kemp is its pit.

The fortunate thing is that the demand to open up the economy is not getting much traction, even with Republicans. Sure, there are the crazies who think it’s government overreach, but they are thankfully a tiny minority (and did I mention crazy), and their pushback to let Americans be free to die isn’t going over well. Everybody wants to go back to living their lives, but it looks like so far they are willing to stay at home, whether in fear or to keep the disease in check until there is a solution.

Time will tell how much the Republican’s attempt to force the economy open will matter…it may be that a lot of the economy just refuses to open and demands that they actually solve the problem before more people die. We may also see enough people go out, get infected, and watch the death toll start to climb even higher than it is now. That’s going to happen no matter what when people congregate, no matter how carefully, it’s just how these things are…really, our safest course of action is for everyone who can stay home to stay home for as long as this takes.

I would suggest that these mayors should publicly put local businesses “on notice” that, until the city gives the OK, the businesses will be held legally responsible if the virus is transmitted at their locations in the course of doing business - up to and including charges of negligent homicide should a death be the result (even if its a secondary infection).

“Her abuse of the use of executive orders is the ultimate government overreach," says the avid Trump supporter.

US Coronavirus figures today (with 7 states still to report)

Total cases 924,237
Cases Today 37,795 (The highest one day increase to date)
Total deaths. 52,168
Deaths today 1,934

By what measure of logic does it make any sense to relax restrictions? Few states are showing evidence of a possible peek of spread and many that are claiming to be simply haven’t been testing for the virus, so they are basically only counting hospitalized cases.

The virus is gaining considerable strength in sates like SD, NB & KS. These are states with very low ratios of hospital beds to citizens. They are arching towards a doubling of case rate every 6 or 5 days. If that gets to 4 to 3 days, they will exhaust their hospital capacity by Mother’s Day.

Meanwhile, across the rest of the country, case numbers will continue to rise almost everywhere.

Insane.
