Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland swept into the hearing room on Wednesday to effectively demolish President Donald Trump’s claim there was no quid pro quo with Ukraine — and he did it with a smirk.
This seems to be a quality of virtually everyone in the Trump mal-administration. In fact, one might go so far as to say that it is an essential qualification.
My guess is that Sondland’s very, very good lawyers cost him something like $250+K. He was well prepaired, his lawyers made efforts to get documents from State (and were rebuffed, something they used to defend Sondland) and clearly had worked very hard with him on getting the tone right.
What you saw at the end was Sondland realize that the congress-critters could not damage him, and the Republicans just start to foam at the mouth. He only started to smile at the end when he realized he had pulled it off.
As a lawyer, I appreciate how well he did. He really took perjury off the table (“it is Mike Pompeo’s fault I don’t have my documents, and any gaps are the result of that”), put a fork in Trump so that moderates/independants will lay off him, while not getting caught going to far.
Look, he (and Volker) were clearly lying in places, such as not knowing “Biden” was at issue, but their answers were very good, and have the benifit of sticking it to Trump, and allowing them to say (a) it was REALLY WRONG, but (b) TRUMP/GUILLIANI, perhaps MULVANEY, POMPEO were the bad guys, just look at the call.
Sometimes the truth is not as good as the testimony, and I think his testimony was probably better than the truth would have been, absent a confession, which we were not gonna get.
Yep, tRump hardly knew him, yet of all the ambassadors that have testified, I don’t believe any others have talked about a phone call with tRump. And, yet, this guy had access to him via private cell phone. That alone is pretty incriminating to tRump.
That was Sondland’s one bad fuck up. He got out over his skis, likely realizing that their were NO MORE REPUBLICANS to question him.
The reality is that someone could have tried to rip apart his credibility, made an argument he was pressured into making anti-Trump statements, changing his testimony, but the R’s were too stupid/rattled to get that going. My guess is that a ferocious attack from the right was what his lawyers feared the most.
Yeah, it was revolting to see this clown act like “hey, why not have a little fun since I have your attention.” Selling your country out is kind of a big deal, and to see someone who, despite the level of their own personal jeopardy, still just doesn’t seem to care.
It’s ten digits. ANYONE could call Trump if they knew the number! That’s like saying I’ve got a close relationship with the people who call me several days a week to sell me an extended warranty on a car I don’t own!
Surprised Nunes didn’t demand that Sondland explain why he hates America.
Seems to be a standard fallback assertion for Republicans when the facts undermine their arguments.
