Ludwig von Mises, father of the Austrian school of libertarian economics, said:
The proof of a theory is in its reasoning, not in its sponsorship.
Up to now most of the arguments for opening up have been coming out of sponsored advertorial from right-wing think tanks. As to masks, no public health person is going to disagree with the GOP’s total about face. Good.
Unfortunately, leading by example, we see a large minority of Americans flouting logic, neither distancing or masking. It cannot be that people are that selfish or ignorant, can it?
Missouri: not only did two hair stylists work while infected with Covid, at least one had symptoms. Also, the free for all at Lake of the Ozarks will be consequential.
Our estimates suggest that the epidemic is not under control in much of the US: as of 17 May 2020, the reproduction number is above the critical threshold (1.0) in 24 [95% CI: 20-30] states. Higher reproduction numbers are geographically clustered in the South and Midwest, where epidemics are still developing, while we estimate lower reproduction numbers in states that have already suffered high COVID-19 mortality (such as the Northeast)
So yah. I guess even Republicans can read and begin to figure maybe they better get behind wearing masks. Better than getting blamed for the death count come October.
SMH, the hairstylists went to work sick. Did anyone take their temperatures before allowing them to cut hair? They both had symptoms. Just a guess that these two stylists are having financial issues and felt as if they needed to work. This country is so upside down.
Going back to today’s quote from the county health department and the Chernobyl assessment. I suppose the Japanese military was saying something similar after the Nagasaki bombing.
“I’m going to be honest with you: We can’t have many more of these.”
Apparently it has occurred to the Republican establishment that there is a political downside to pandering to the yahoos. But they should not expect Trump to join them.
This is exactly right. The few Republicans who aren’t total idiots realize it doesn’t help to open the economy if no one will come. And if you don’t take measures to make people feel comfortable about being in public, essentially nothing changes. It’s a shame their rationale is more economic than humanitarian, but I guess I’ll take it.
