The ballot measure to enshrine abortion rights in Michigan’s constitution garnered more petition signatures from everyday voters than any measure in the state’s history: Roughly 750,000, well above the state’s threshold.
This is proof positive that Republicans DO NOT value the will of the people they are elected to serve, but only of the people who pay to get them elected.
This is why ‘full justification’ requires proofreading, people. It smushes stuff, it stretches stuff, it needs quality-control effort put in by people paying attention to WTF they’re doing.
Also, Republicans suck, and they’re grasping at bullshit straws.
FWIW, my very dear friend who is very active in League of Women Voters in the Detroit area, who collected signatures for both this abortion proposal as well as the voting rights proposal says, yeah, they’re being assholes about it, but she’s sure both are going to make the ballot.
I know TPM has a skeleton crew on weekends but this story, and a couple others recently, are older news items by several days. It’s a little disheartening to read things first on Raw Story or other aggregators when TPM is my real jam.
Of course the objected is pretextual. MAGAs love this stuff because it lets them “own the libs” while not actually taking a stance on the underlying issue. It’s basically the same thing with the Trump “special master na na na na na” judge’s ruling. authoritarians LOVE pretext and enforcing whatever they rely on as if their logic is unassailable simply by saying loudly and confidently.
What kind of dumbfuck law do they have that requires ballot measures to be photo-ready? Shit like this should be presented to the ballot printer as TEXT, not as a goddamn photo. JFC.
