Josh Hawley is what you get when the National Party abandons a state as part of something less than a 50 state strategy. Missouri used to be purple. Now it is bright red. The people haven’t changed. What has changed is the Democrats gave up on it.

Hawley isn’t stupid, but he sure is dumb.
He seems to genuinely believe that this is an entre to the 2024 nomination.
If the GOP remains stupid enough to select him, he will lose ignominiously and continue to be an embarrassment to Missouri.

This is Hawley trying to set himself up for 2024, where he can tell the Trump voters that he “defended” Trump’s win. That’s all it is, a play to win in the primary where the right wing nuts will have the most power. He’s assuming that Trump won’t run, and that Don Jr. will be worthless (both are good bets), and that few Republicans really have the stomach to take the Trump lane and most of them are idiots (see Gohmert, Louie).
Politically, it might be a good play…if he can get the Trump nuts to rally around him and become their leader in the next three years he just might win the first few primary contests before the other Republicans sort themselves out. It’s the Trump strategy from 2016, except that Hawley is actually a smart politician. Morally, it’s repugnant, because Hawley knows that there isn’t any real voter fraud, that states followed their election laws, and that there is no real reason to object.
Of course, that division between political win and moral behavior defines the Republican party right now, so Hawley is exactly where he belongs.
