Why does there always have to be a performance with these people? It’s like they’re the F1 generation of a cross between John Wilkes Booth with Elizabeth Taylor.
Is he going to sign an official objection alongside a member of the House? No? He’s gonna get Maxine Waters’d, then. I don’t think any of these posturing shitweasels have the courage to actually raise a formal, signed objection and force their fellow shitweasels to go on the record with a vote.
(And for the record, I applaud what Maxine and the other House dems did in 2001.)
Hummm what a man!..er wait I mean a dick. Hey I was close!
Greeting from Missouri. I want to be clear that Hawley doesn’t have to do this to defend his Senate seat. His seat is very safe.
Hawley is doing this because he wants too.
About halfway into this podcast, @josh_m discusses his view on the performative nature of especially Republican political action.
Sometimes you can get too far out of bounds and get caught. Hawley risks leaving the reservation on this and having to explain in ‘bigly’ in 2023/4 when he runs for the Big House. And what is he going to do about it? Object? That accomplishes nothing but showboating; does he have a fix that is not self-serving?
Deeply stupid. He just killed any Presidential ambitions he thought he had.
“Millions of voters concerned about election integrity deserve to be heard,”
81 million voters concerned about election integrity WERE heard.
Thanks. Josh has discussed this “performance” thing on twitter and in some of his essays. As far as I can tell, this performative imperative started with Newt Gingrich and the “Contract on America”, where all these GOP fuckpuffins would ceremoniously walk out onto the capital steps and do the blah, blah, yada yada, American people, jibber jabber in front of the press corps. It’s gotten worse since they discovered that their base values meaningless performative rituals over well defined policy and will even change their views on policies to conform to the wingnut darlings of the moment.
What astounds me is that there are not a few on the left that want Democrats to adopt this style over substance strategy. I don’t think you can have both. Substance, facts, policy, etc. Is boring and will always be outcompeted by “style” and performative gestures.
Josh Hawley: ‘Man of La Dunce-a’
@ralph_vonholst, it’s not a direct answer to your question, but I find it very insightful generally.
I’ll have a listen. Thank you, again. Forgive my rant.
While content-free and often not paired with legislation that could get passed, these performative speech acts are the opposite of meaningless. On the contrary, they are overloaded with symbolic meaning (“freedom”, “America”, etc.) and that is why they are effective at retaining and motivating their target audience, while being ineffective at making substantive changes to law.
(I hate trying to do this on my phone, so I will leave it there for now.)
“Millions of voters concerned about election integrity deserve to be heard.”
They’re not concerned. They’re just butt hurt losers who are too immature to do the adult thing and accept that you win some and you lose some. They don’t deserve to be heard anymore than a child in the check out line that’s screaming and kicking because they didn’t get the candy deserves to be indulged.
And to think, this Jackass claims to be a “Constitutional Scholar.” My ASS ! The Letters of Ascertainment have been signed by the 50 Governors and are now in the National Archives. These objections are groundless and have no chance of changing the outcome. No “Constitutional Scholar” would object to these duly selected Electors. Hawley is to the Constitution as Lucifer is to Sunday School !
If you want to vent your on spleen on his sorry, traitorous ass, here is his mailing address: Sen. Josh Hawley, 212 Russell Senate Office Building, Washington DC 20510
Well I don’t approve the shit for brainses who Misery keeps electing either, but I never once thought I had the right to sue.
True.
And careerists.
I’m actually not opposed to making all the Senators vote. The main reason the McConnell Senate has such a hard time finding common ground is that they seldom have to, because he won’t let them vote.
I meant meaningless in the “nonsensical” sense of the world. But I take your point. Astrology is full of symbolism, but is scientifically meaningless — nonsense.
