This is so good for McSally’s opponent I’m amazed she would behave this way! And he’s an astronaut! This kind of temperament from McSally doesn’t earn her any new friends, even in Arizona. She tried the base-only approach in 2018, and lost. Arizona is changing and while there is a LARGE chunk of very conservative voters, the energy in is progressive constituencies. So she need independents and swing voters to find a path to victory, and she just showed she doesn’t think that will work so she’s decided to maximize her base appeal and let swing voters go to the astronaut husband of Gabby Giffords.

He asked a perfectly reasonable question, and she’s an obvious target for it since AZ is going purple and her seat will be a hot item with a strongly fought campaign…anything she does in this trial is going to affect if she keeps the seat. Her answer broke all levels of decorum that you expect from a senator responding to the press…you think that kind of thing maybe, but you never say it. The fact that she’s proud of what she said, of denigrating the press, makes it clear how unfit to serve as a senator she is, and it’s very likely that the people of AZ will realize that. I mean, just the comparison with McCain and how he dealt with people, even the ones he didn’t like, that’s going to stick out.
There aren’t enough Trump crazies in the state to get away with acting like this, and this kind of behavior will resonate with them…and, it looks like at least some Republicans in AZ (like the McCain family) are not going to help her either. Serves her right.

Her response to Raju, that he’s just a “liberal hack” is very telling with regard to how she plans on running for reelection, and for that matter probably the entire Republican Party. This story and her appearance on Ingraham just underscore that. They are most certainly going to run on the most extreme version of turning out the base that we have ever seen. It is going to be one ugly fucking election. Once the repugs figure that independents are not going their way they are going to try and squeeze out every last drop from the base. With Arizona dabbling with being purple-ish, but still essentially a republican state you can expect to hear more “liberal hack” nonsense from McSally, maybe even “fake news.” At some point they’re gonna realize it’s all they’ve got and it’s pedal to the metal Thelma and Louise all the way.

Precisely. They will feed the orcs as much red meat as they need as long as they drag them across the finish line. McSally is not going to run a campaign with the idea that Arizona is trending purple. She’s going to run a base strategy. It’s all about turning out the base. That’s it. Nothing more.
