There was an NPR story about how San Diego’s installation of “smart streetlights” turned parts of the city into a Great Britain-style CCTV paradise when police started to use their camera feeds for solving first violent crimes and now increasingly other categories of crime. I suppose the silver lining of having a Mussolini wannabe in the White House who perverts the justice system is that it reinforces clearly the dangers of the surveillance state that we are passively falling into.

I was thinking the other day that I’m glad the national elections aren’t federalized. I once hoped they would be to minimize the chances of state-based shenanigans. Now, though, I’m happy that they remain a state-by-state process, because hackers and suppressors will have to work a lot harder–they’ll have to be in all 50 states, working full-time.
