GOP Mad at Candidate For Doing Xenophobia The Wrong Way

Bo French wasn’t always this way. When he first ran for statewide office in Texas in 2016, he was an oil industry scion who hadn’t quite found his way: a partnership with American sniper Chris Kyle had fallen apart after his death; other business ventures petered out. In an ad, French portrayed himself as a…

There’s no great mystery here. French was a bigot to start with, but it wasn’t acceptable to express that openly until trump came along and won the election in 2016. After that win, previously contemptible expressions of bigotry became a great way to get attention with the GOP primary electorate. So he started doing this shit in real earnest a few years ago after getting elected (by party insiders) to be head of the Tarrant County Republican Party, then parlayed all the resulting attention into the GOP nomination for the Railroad Commission.

And now, with a little luck and a wave year for Dems, it might just be too much for the state to stomach. But it’s still a downballot race where partisan fundamentals tend to matter more than the candidates.

This is the meritocracy that Republicans claim to want in action. Every one of those students was in the top 5% of their graduating class.

JD Vance is signaling loudly that he wants a Do-Over and for some official power-person to send his Hindu wife (brown kids, too, likely) back to Bangalore so he can marry Erika Kirk, who is just right white.

Yeah, but he surely didn’t mean to include any descendants of imported black slaves.

Thank you for your thorough reporting.

If the GOP didn’t have Xenophobia, they would have squat.

In fairness to Bo French, how is a humble servant supposed to know where to limit his xenophobic statements in today’s GOP? Where should he stop? Seems like everything has been on the table before.

Oh…they must have done a focus group and found out it was hurting them, so they want to stop it just before the elections. And the GOP may not be wrong, their constituents do not have the memory of a fabled elephant. I am not sure that Bo read the memo though.

hey now, don’t forget the misogyny

“Forget it, Jake, it’s Texas.”

Obligatory policy related facts why this was entirely bullshit anyway, and he knew it:

  1. Texas law requires 90% of UT-Austin students come from in-state. Only 4% are international
  2. 75% of the 90% are auto-admits based on class rank (Top 5%) from their Texas high school

This system has existed for this century. Anyone whose graduated or had a kid apply in the last 25 years knows this. So that’s another reason the blowback is intense in Texas because statistically almost every student shown is a Texan who got in on merit.

And yet Indian-Americans tend to vote GOP because of taxes and de-regulation. They see this kind of racism as something pols use to win votes, but it doesn’t really affect them.

Pols in India use all kinds of divisive subjects, religion, caste, language for the same purpose.
