The Georgia Supreme Court, unanimously and without commentary, shot down Republicans’ attempt to bar a day of early voting in the Senate runoff between Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) and Herschel Walker.
Maybe the justices took one look at SCOTUS and decided that they would prefer to let them be the ones to bask/ squirm in the spotlight for being so political.
From the article: "The dispute over this Saturday in particular came down to idiosyncrasies of state law: Republicans, at one point supported by Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger ®, said that a regulation prohibiting Saturday voting after a holiday puts the post-Thanksgiving day out of bounds. Warnock’s campaign, and assorted Democratic entities, said that that law applies only to primary and general elections, not to runoffs.
Fulton County Judge Thomas Cox, now supported by the appellate and high courts, sided with the Democrats.
“Had the Legislature been so inclined, they could have easily included runoff to continue this pattern of a three-category list but they chose not to,” he wrote. “In this instance it is obvious that they chose not to because it was previously included in the text of the statute but was later removed.”
What are the odds the Republican controlled Georgia state legislature will amend the law before the next election, I’d say 100%
Apparently the law disallows voting the second Saturday before election day if it is a day or two after a holiday but then the third Saturday before election day would be an early voting day. In this case, there is no third Saturday before the date because the need for the run-off wasn’t certified until this past Monday. Thus the need for allowing voting on the 26 th.
It used to be Robert E. Lee day, a state holiday, even though Lee’s birthday is January 19. Most likely an excuse to give state workers a four-day holiday. The state did give up the Lee association but kept the state holiday feature.
I am edgy on this. The GOP (about the most driven agent as I have ever seen in the name of destroying Democracy) doesn’t give a hoot about Walker, in any sense of the word, aside from football.
But they want that Senate seating to stay 50-50.
The differences between the two candidates are such that it would be difficult to avoid over-confidence… I would go into this with the attitude that Warnock needs every vote in the state of Georgia to win this thing.

Oh, my. I’d bring Republicans a glass of water to help swallow their disappointment, but I understand they’ve made that illegal too. Oh, well. I guess they’ll just have to choke on it.
