Merrick Garland announced Thursday that he has appointed Robert Hur, a former U.S. attorney from Maryland, as special counsel to investigate President Joe Biden’s handling of classified documents.
Keep the eye on the ball, folks. This won’t stop the DOJ from indicting Trump on the three statutes listed in the MAL search warrant. None of which would apply here, unless a Biden staffer “willfully withheld” something and that doesn’t seem likely.
A Special Counsel won’t stop the yammering from the Right, but it was a good move anyway. Lindsey Graham can at least get up off his fainting couch.
Yay. At least we can count on the media and Congress to focus laser-like on the huge differences of quality and quantity vs. TFG. And we can rest easy, knowing they won’t pretend this somehow absolves the former president.
Let’s get it all out in the open and stop with the theatrics. Either this is common practice or it’s not; either this is a problem with how the government is managing security documents or it’s not.
I’ve about had it with the entire situation, so let’s get it investigated and off the table. Let’s get some serious rules in place and then let’s set out to enforce them.
This is the best possible way to handle this. Garland has basically gotten in front of this mess and appointed the special counsel before Republicans had a chance to grandstand on the matter so no one can accuse either Biden or Garland of stonewalling this. It’s still not good, but if there was ever a way of making this mess go away, this would be how it’s done.
Edit: I should make the point here that Hillary’s greatest misconception was to assume that, since the law was on her side, optics didn’t matter. She was always wrong about this and never seemed to learn her lesson. This is why she hurt Bill Clinton’s administration during the Whitewater investigation and herself with the emails.
She would always “cooperate,” but very reluctantly which played right into her enemy’s hands. She always acted like someone who was hiding something even when she wasn’t and the right just ate her up because of this. She also always assumed that when the law vindicated her, that would be enough. She was consistently wrong in her assumptions and never seemed to learn which was very frustrating.
How does the Brown Noser Brigade like Garland now?
I predicted several months ago that as soon as the GQP took control of congress not only that it would be Hunter and Hillary 24/7, but Garland would shift immediately and he has. He ONLY hesitates to do anything to republicans. The first thing he did was DEFEND Trump in a defamation action which had zip to do with the presidency.
I have zero faith in Garland today less than even yesterday when I had so little. I sure hope the folks who shout down the Garland doubters around here shut the fuck up from now on.
But they won’t. They’ll look forward to ANOTHER press conference or cryptic crumb to argue how Garland is playing 11the dimensional chess and handling this like a pro due to the most recent events.
If it was, I would hope the investigation uncovers that. I suspect not though. It was probably an oversight amidst the rush of affairs of State. As VP, Biden would have been processing a lot of classified material
Given that this unfortunate thing has happened, I wonder if, in the eyes of those infamous “independent voters,” it might enhance the credibility of the special counsel in Trump’s case to see the same thing being done in Biden’s.
Agreed. I don’t think we should be clutching our pearls and howling about how it’s not fair, nor should we be cowering and whimpering that we’re DOOOOMED. We’ll see how this plays out.
It’s not brown-nosing to say getting in front of this situation before some loud-mouthed, yammering Republican does is a good thing.
Edited to add - I doubt most non-political-watching Americans are going to care much as long as inflation is cooling, gas prices lower, and they can find jobs.
Garland moves faster on Biden than anyone has on Scumbag who had months and months and months and months of kid glove treatment. This is one of those situations where folks trying to salvage something out of it by appealing to the supposed appropriate and high ethical standards of it all reminds me of a line from Ms. Meryl Streep in “Death Becomes Her.”
I may be misremembering but I feel like it got out during the Clinton mess than over-classification was an issue.
I would bet classified documents are absolutely all over the place. Remember when we learned that some GOP goons used private emails after clutching their pearls? Goodness knows what’s tucked in back drawers in congressional offices.
Anyway, if Biden mishandled documents, let him deal with the consequences.
