GA Rep. Who Was Arrested For Knocking On Kemp’s Door Will Not Be Prosecuted

She would lose that claim because the cop had probable cause to arrest her for trespass and disrupting a legislative proceeding. It’s an uncommonly stupid exercise of police power, but that doesn’t make it a false arrest.

Knocking on the door strikes me as asking for permission to enter. How is that trespass? Also, she’s a legislator - shouldn’t she be part of a legislative proceeding?

(not quibbling, just genuinely curious)

I don’t think you know who Ms. Fani Willis is.

Besides being a she, she is a Democratic D.A. who was not the one who arrested the representative. The police did. Ms.Willis, who is also busy investigating Trump, basically told the police to go blow.

Good for them as it would not be a good look for the white supremacist majority in Georgia who has spent the week trying to convince the voters and more importantly the corporations who they are used to milking for contributions that they really AREN’T trying to disenfranchise voters just make them do what they want!

Good day for Justice and Georgia, and especially great vindication for Congresswoman Cannon

maybe if she wore a MAGA hat and carried an AR-15, they’d at least hold the door open for her as she walked by…

Of course she won’t be prosecuted. There was no crime. It was unlawful detention under color of law (or similar legal wording, because IANAL).

What I am surprised about is that there wasn’t a whole line of mask-wearing Democrats behind Rep. Park Cannon, each separated by six feet, waiting their turn to knock on the Governor’s door to declare their displeasure. The New Jim Crow deserves full-on disdain with maximum warp drive.

They’ve already gotten what they wanted out of the arrest. A Black legislator being dragged through the capitol building for “interfering” with the business of the legislature. And now, a Black DA refuses to charge her. It doesn’t matter that it was a, you will pardon the expression, trumped up charge. Instead they have been able to arrest a woman for knocking on a door and will be able to claim that the DA is not living up to her obligations.

Eight years for knocking on a door while Black? Sounds about right for GA.

Note that it’s very possible a white male DA would have pursued prosecution, just to “teach her a lesson about her place”. The power of electing diverse people into positions in government is pretty apparent here.

That’s after you plead it down from 5 years in the electric chair.

They have made progress in Georgia. In the old days there is no way a black woman wouldn’t have seen 8 years in prison for annoying a white man by knocking on his door.

After reviewing all of the evidence, I have decided to close this matter,” [Fulton County District Attorney Fani] Willis said in an emailed statement to the Associated Press. “It will not be presented to a grand jury for consideration of indictment, and it is now closed.”

It would have been, like, so funny if a DA brought this before a grand jury expecting an indictment.

Being neighborly is not a crime, no matter what seven white guys in a room think.

She is the smartest DA in Georgia.

And she is going to get Trump.

Signing a bill into law is an executive action. Do you really think gym jordan should be entitled to show up at any bill signing he wants to?

Only if she gave them a selfie

So, the disruption charge would be regarding an executive proceeding I guess. Gym Jordan is a white alpha male, so I’m also guessing White Nationalist Privilege would cover his entitlements…

Does the flag on the right have a burning cross on it? I can’t be sure.

But how can a State Legislator trespass at the state capitol?
