From ‘Obsolete’ To ‘Most Important’ Deal: Trump Shifts Tone On NATO Amid Impeachment | Talking Points Memo

President Trump is serving up intense whiplash on NATO while in London for the summit this week — a reversal transparently related to his ongoing trouble on the home front.

NATO should reward him with an agreement to have another summit. Hey, it worked for North Korea…

Another factor: trump has serious issues with France’s Macron. Since Macron recently criticized NATO, trump supports them (for now).

I want to personally thank Emmanuel Macron for f’ing up Trump’s sh*t so badly at the NATO conference that Trump wishes he were back in DC to witness his own impeachment.

The whole thing is getting too convoluted to follow. That poor orange rhesus monkey would be completely lost if he didn’t have Putin as his true north to navigate by.

I’ve come to view the western alliance/western democracies more and more as one entity/group. I find myself taking as much interest in elections in other democracies as our own. We are one alliance. We have to fix our own mess, but others, like Macron, are holding the fort for us. The work that the EU, Canada and other allies have done to maintain global stability and marginalize the Trump impact is valuable.

This is election strategy…Trump has torn down so many international agreements that doing the same to something like NATO, which is a core of national policy now, will lose him a lot of centrist votes. That’s especially so because of the “helping Russia” angle…killing NATO only helps Russia, there’s no other reason to do it, and we’re about to get a lot of evidence in the public sphere showing that blaming Ukraine for interfering in 2016 is a Russian plot. That’s going to hurt Republicans if they keep spreading Russian propaganda, eventually enough people will get it and turn against them.

Everything Trump does is for his benefit, and whiplashing around like this means that he, or his advisers, understand that he’s harming his election chances. We will see a lot more of this before 2020 as they try to scare up every vote that they can.

Could not figure what language Trump was speaking.
Is there a bitch and moan, or repeat and threaten repeat and threaten language.
Don’t think it was English.

Trump doused himself with fresh hair dye, so this clearly is important.

For the life of me, if I were asked to cite at least one redeeming quality of any kind - personal, professional, political, anything - about Trump, I would draw a complete blank. Nothing.

I literally grew up with NATO.

I was in HS in West Germany when the Cuban Missile Crisis went down. And it was scary.

In addition, my Mom’s best friend was in France, where her husband was stationed (most U.S. Military personnel there lived on the economy). What I learned in both countries was invaluable in terms of recognizing just how fragile Democracy is.

The only problems I ever had with the Germans in my childhood were:

  • The German kids were much more athletic than we were.

  • The Germans had a tendency to stare at POC like me**, in localities where U.S. troops were not always present. The French? Not a glance.

One more thing. Those countries are so close together (in Europe generally) that multilingualism is almost a yawning ho-hum afterthought.

Trump and the EU? Trump and NATO? I really would place money on a bet that Trump thinks the Swiss share an ocean shore.

**The French colonial experience and the German one diverge

I have no words for how relieved I was when Justin Trudeau won reelection. And I worry a great deal about Monsieur Macron when his comes up.

Too toxic even for that. Hamberder diet does not make good fertilizer.
