I’m a little worried about France. I had planned a return trip there and had to postpone due to Covid. It was a close call when Macron beat out that Nationalist woman, Marie Le Pen. With the issues they are having now with some of the muslim population cutting teacher’s heads off and what not, I’m concerned they’ll end up with the French version of trump.

In that case, they will suffer. Much more than simple indignities, as we have.
That would be unfortunate.

Macron’s positive test had a domino effect across Europe—Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has been forced to self-isolate after meeting Macron on Monday, as has Charles Michel, the president of the European Council. French Prime Minister Jean Castex and the parliament speaker, Richard Ferrand, will also isolate.

Glad I got my last trip in almost 3 years ago before the destruction of Notre Dame and then all the Covid hell.

This is how it used to look.

The times I’ve been, I felt like the Muslims have kept a very low profile. I would notice them in markets but not so much in every day walking down the street. The day I was leaving for the airport I did see police breaking up an encampment of homeless people. The only time I ever saw this and I was there for 2 months, but only in Paris for a short time.

All true, but Macron defeated Le Pen in a rout, 66% to 34%. The ugly potential is there, but in a 2-way race she has all the limitations of a David Duke.

You’re making it sound like Notre Dame was completely destroyed in the fire last year. Only the roof and a few artifacts were damaged. The bell towers, rose window, and most of the artifacts are still fine.

Hey, I watched the documentary on what happened and what’s involved in rebuilding. It’s not that simple, they’re going to have to redo roofs and all the timbers that were there to support them. They didn’t know if the outer walls would cave in so they did supporting on the inside until they could stabilize the building. And, the spire gone. It’s a project that will probably go on for at least 10 years. They are having to take out and clean and remove soot from all the windows. And, yes, in my mind it was destroyed and I cried watching it.

I was on that bridge by Notre Dame in January of 89 and got chased off by the cops because of a bomb threat (not me, I swear).
Afterwards I watched Super Bowl XXIII, SF v. Cin, in my room in the Paris Hilton late at night.
The French announcer would say “oooh la la!” After every dramatic play. On a kickoff the receiver was flipped 360 in the air and the announcer said “OOOOH LA LA LA LA !!!”.

Virulent anti-immigration sentiments backed up by pure racism are universal problems that no modern democratic government is safe from. Fortunately almost always a minority of the populace, but always a loud and angry component of government - from Israel right through the Scandinavian countries and everywhere in between.
