Francis Endorses Same-Sex Civil Unions For The First Time As Pope | Talking Points Memo

I’m sure he didn’t intend it, but this is a big “UP YOURS” to Amy Corney Biggot.

Oh that Pope…he’s such a mensch.

I want to like this 10,000 times. This is an epic statement from Pope Francis.

We have something in common. Both raised in devout Irish Roman Catholic families.

Of those who reigned more than 33 days, Francis is my favorite.

(He’s so popular, his Papal Trading Card fetches a Leo XIII and a Pius IX!)

ETA: The kippah’s a nice touch, but – seriously – white after Labor Day?

Mr Pope Francis:

“Homosexual people have the right to be in a family. They are children of God. What we have to have is a civil union law; that way they are legally covered.”

Such bold leadership, saying that homosexual people should be able to go to the registry office and get “a civil union”. He can’t even use the word “married”. Yea yea, Church teachings and all that shit.

And you know, that sexual stuff those homosexual people do is a SIN. And getting married in a church is unthinkable.

Stupid fucking religion. Bigotry dressed up in rotten piety. Amazing how many not-overtly-religious people militantly refuse to see that. Of course, Mr F is bucking the trend and so on and so fort. So what? Variations on idiocy and bigotry, defining of a malignant institution.

Yes, fighting institutions is very difficult, and he’s doing it at least in some ways.

Plus this particular fight is not a new one for him.

Yes well if you shepherd sheep, and you get them to go where you want them, you get them to go through the gate and count them one by one. It takes time.

Well, he is at least leading, I think we can say.

As for the rest of it: I agree with you.

Agreed. But think about that: a revered spiritual leader of the world finally comes out in 2020 and issues something that – if you want that kind of spiritual leadership – a decent 8-year-old would find at best minimally acceptable. Leadership is relative – depends on who is being lead.

Yes, you’re only a leader to the extent that others actually follow.

It’s exactly like being a teacher …

A few months ago I saw the obituary of Hutton Gibson, the actor Mel’s father. His claim to fame was being a retrograde “traditionalist Catholic” who wouldn’t even recognize the Pope.
The man also trafficked in bizarro conspiracy theories such as the airplanes that crashed into the Twin towers were remote controlled. And to no shock of many he was also a Holocaust denier.
With Francis’ comments on civil unions for gay couples it’s expected that there will be backlash from the Opis Dei, Legionnaires of Christ and the nutty Bill Donahue of the Catholic League.

About gays, the Pope famously said “Who am I to judge?” And everyone lapped it up, which was the point. Because, of course, he does judge, and quite negatively, yet wants everyone to see him as a thoughtful, nonjudgemental man. Back in May 2015, the Vatican declared the gay marriage referendum in Ireland a “Defeat for humanity”. Those people, they are sinners. An honest answer to his question “Who am I to judge?” would not be polite, but a stab at it would be: Yes you do judge, and you are an arrogant and ignorant man for that judgement, and worse for slyly trying to pretend otherwise. Back in 2016 the Pope called for the church to be “more welcoming and less judgmental”, but it must, perforce, remain firmly judgmental. Bigotry with a smile, or a face of concern.

Priests now are to welcome “single parents, gay people, and unmarried straight couples who are living together”. Gay people who are living together, married civil-unioned or not? “Who am I to judge?” How come so many people fall for this duplicity?

Divorcees should seek the counsel of a priest who could “help them to examine their conscience”. Ironic. Worse. The Church hierarchy have signally not examined their consciences regarding involvement in pedophilia organized crime.

The Catholic Church is like any corporation trying to protect its brand and engage in all that advertising avails, including duplicity. So nothing really disturbing there. What is bothersome is how willing people are to engage in self-delusion. People gravitate to those who present themselves as authority figures, particularly moral authority figures. And so we’re stuck with the Church, succor to false selves.

If my old US catholic roomate from college is any indicator, they’ll just double down on their loathing for the socialist, communist Francis and vote straight republican on the 3rd to restore those good, old fashioned US values like keeping LBGTQ’s in closets, POC under the jackbooted police, and women at home barefoot and pregnant.

This is a clear shot across the bow of the Crazy Handmaiden whom Trump is putting on the Court. If she claims to be such a devout Catholic, well, his Holiness has spoken.

The Catholic Church is like the Republican Party. The bar is underground. So if someone says something marginally sane, he is a hero.

Good Pope. Bad Church. Let’s hope (and for some of us, pray) that his reform efforts won’t be completely sabotaged/undermined by the likes of Agnus Dei and CUFF (Catholics United For The Faith).

It sure would have been interesting if this was last week and some Democrat was able to ask Barrett about this in the hearings…watching her tap dance around the Pope saying that gay civil unions are fine would have made for some compelling imagery. I’m sure it won’t stop her from overturning marriage equality the first chance she gets though.

I wonder if this will give Amy Barrett any pause when she votes to overturn same sex marriage. Nah, she’s just a fucking Republican who just wants to shove her religious beliefs down everyones throat.

I’d be willing to bet Amy Coney Barrett (fake Catholic) thinks she knows better than the Pope (who speaks the words of God directly) on this issue, would love to hear what she thinks of it.
